John Whitton Iron Lattice Railway Bridge Cycle Way.

Took these two pictures yesterday. This was the first time I have actually walked across this bridge since it was converted fit this use. I can't believe it's almost 20 years since it was done. That's how long it sat idle after the new bridge opened back in 1980.
Does anyone know why it was replaced?
It looks so sound with all the intricate lattice work on the sides and underneath the tracks.
I had no idea it had such ornate stonework for the abutments. That's the standards of the Victorian era for you!

To Boronia, no it's double track and they are still under there. The sleepers act as supports to the pathway which is made from metal sheeting of some kind.
The old Como railway bridge, of the same design but for single track, had gauntlet rails for the double tracks each side.

The pathway sits over part of each track, leaving room to spare on each side as seen in the second picture. The added path itself makes the bridge appear more narrow than it is.
I recommend anyone who hasn't walked it yet to get out there and do it. I'm glad I finally did and the walk from Meadowbank to Rhodes doesn't take as long as you think.

Iron doesn't get painted.

If it's a cycleway don't you get abused by cyclists if you try to walk it? That's what I find on other cycleways. Or is it a shared path?

Yes it's shared, like the Como bridge, which is painted and was converted to a shared path way back in 1985.
I quite like the rusted look of the Meadowbank bridge.
Too many things have been cleaned up and it can take away it's feel. It's nice to have something rough around the edges for a change and it doesn't have to carry locomotives anymore.
