Bosnjak JBJ mo5115

Post by Cordes Express »

From a photo I found from Centralian on the BA Photo Gallery, I am now really curious about the bus mentioned. How many buses were powered with Rolls Royce engines???.. Does anyone have more photos of it? What ever happened to it???

Already done that, just wondering if the bus kept the RR Engine... Or if it was repowered... Fleet list don't tell you that..

It was re-powered with a Bedford 500 and last served at the former Penrith Depot.

There were five JBJ (John, Bob & Jim) chassis built with the Rolls Royce engine, all gas powered and fitted with Allison autos and Rockwell axles. The chassis were constructed in the Parramatta Bus Company's workshop in Church Street. 5115 had the Smithfield Bus & Coach Works body and was a demonstrator that traveled all over NSW, hence the unique livery. The four others were built by Custom Coaches, as Bosnjak's had just sold SBCW to Jack Violet (CCMC). They performed rather well, although were heavy on gas usage, requiring fueling twice a day on some occasions. Fouling spark plugs was another problem with the big straight engine. All were based at Edensor Park depot where a gas fuel facility was built for these buses. Most all were used on route 80 (ex Fairlines) and route 78 (ex Mrs. Evans). When John Bosnjak sadly passed away suddenly, the project stalled and no more chassis were built. John, a staunch Leyland man, was also considering a major fleet replacement program utilising the Leyland Tiger chassis, however, as we all now now, Volvo received the order and the B10M's flowed. All five JBJ's received Bedford 500 engines, all installed at the Edensor Park depot by Foreman Charlie Debono. All were sold in the end as mobile homes, with 5115 ending its revenue service life at Penrith (ex Bale's) depot.

The JBJ was displayed at the annual bus show (then at Fairfield Showground). I remember watching the demonstration of the motor idling whilst a 2c coin (remember them ?) was balanced on its edge and did not fall over. I recall being told the JBJs were fitted with a light on the dashboard so that the driver knew the engine was running - they were so smooth and quiet you could not tell otherwise.

4946 was selected to operate the new Route 300 Red Arrow service. It also had the Smithfield body alongside 4944, Western Road Transport's new Volvo B58, which also operated route 300. I think I may have transferred m/o599 onto 4946, as I was crazy about three digit plates!

Those were the days when you could pick the operator and bus from a few clues - Watts AEC Swift and Blythe's Coachmaster body in the first, one of Rowe's Vikings in the second.
Try the same today from an all white livery or TNSW blue/white !
