Read yesterday that QANTAS is going to retire it's 747s earlier than initially planned. They had planned for a phase out by 2022/23 but now the plan is have them gone by by the end of 2020.

I'm actually surprised they are still in the air. Those drearliners are Toyota Camrys of the air, in comparison to the mighty 747, which is going the way of the Concorde.

You blokes do say some strange things about planes.

The 787 uses a lot less fuel than the 747 and is not so maintenance intensive - so despite the smaller size and passenger capacity of the 787, it has a significantly higher availability and therefore Qantas does not necessarily loose passenger capacity.

I should add that I flew to Hong Kong and back in a Qantas 747 in March and as mighty a plane as it is, the 787 is more comfortable with improved pressurisation and better air-conditioning - additionally the windows are larger, providing a better view.

Yes, I do know they provide a smoother ride by far, but boy, they look like a 767 on the outside, the former staple of bread and butter domestic air travel. The 747 brings the sexy glamorous image of international travel like no other. The 777 is also a smooth operator with those whopping turbines hanging either side.
It's good to see Qantas buying Boeing again, though.

Yes, your comments are spot on, from a visual aspect the 747 presents a dramatic impression either taking off or landing. The A380, whilst again great to travel, visually it looks like an overweight elderly gentleman (bit like me, I suppose!) - a stretched version would look a lot better, but I doubt that will ever happen.

The other current airliners are visually all similar - I think that I prefer the nose of the old 767 to the new and more slopping nose of the 787. The plane that has not been mentioned is the 777-300 series, a good looking plane and a great one to fly in!!!.

No more shapely bodies like the 747, no more tri jets. The skies are becoming as bland as the roads!!
