BusNSW Bus Show

Postby Tim Williams » Sat Oct 08, 2016 9:12 am

I do hope someone is going to post some photos - I made the mistake of taking a small camera (instead of my normal Olympus OMD) and the results I obtained were inferior. The little Panasonic GF3 takes great outdoor photos, but ones taken at the show were not particularly sharp. There were a few deckers at the show:
1. Sydney Museum's RT - beautifully restored by Bustech (even if the seat material looks like "RM" to me!) - but they really have done a great job inside and out, some sign writing or transfers are now needed.
2. Bustech CDI - SkyBus no 112.
3. Volgren/Volvo Optimus DD
4. MAN/Gemilang DD.
5. BCI Cityrider DD.
6. Sydney Museum's prewar Leyland TD - in its wonderful red livery.

And operating a circular service around the Olympic area and down to the ferry terminal were 3 of the museums DD's - an early Sydney Atlantean, Regent 3 and an obviously recently repainted OPD2 - looking very smart.

If no one does post I will a couple of inferior photos, later today or tomorrow,

There was a good selection of urban and school buses and premium coaches, but not one artic., is this a sign of the future??

Transit Graphics has the usual display, unfortunately uncaptioned, on their Facebook:

I'm disappointed at the lack of innovation - yet again.

The museum's wonderful RT - repainted & re-upholstered by Bustech and a great job done too!!

Bustech's CDI is of similar overall height to the RT (which is just under 14' 2") but, being a low floor bus, the ceiling heights in the CDI are significantly better.

RT interior top deck - I think the seat material used is the RM type, as the earlier type might not be available.

It was a bit overdone with Bustech branding inside. Perhaps it could now be classed as an RTi

This first MAN/Gemilang is really a "proof of concept" and production buses will have increased top deck ceiling height.

The Volgren is a good looking bus, and well organised inside, I hope increased axle weight allowances will this design on the road in reasonable numbers.

These are excellent photos thanks Tim, no need to apologise for quality.

After digging deep on the BCI website, I see that their so-called "city bus" is actually a low entry bus, not a low floor bus. It has a flight of steps in the aisle after the second door - in other words, an outer suburban or country bus, not one designed for processing large numbers of passengers with high turnover, which is what a citybus is. Like Bustech's economy with the facts, it's not enough having the gall to call it a "low floor", they also describe it as an "ultra low floor" bus. Being a public forum, I'll keep the language I normally would use to express my discontent with this state of affairs under my hat.

In other words, it's just another same old, stuck in a rut, Australian outer-urban bus design. Somebody wake me up when a citybus turns up at a Bus Show!

Thanks you for sharing those photos Tim Williams. I cannot see any issue with the quality of the photos, they are quite good.

The Sydney Bus Show seems like a rather interesting event - I will have to go one year. Was there a Citaro or anything European there? - Tony P's post above suggests not. Al least there were some new decker designs.

Happy to share with those that couldn't get there. I get the feeling there must have been a lot of camera battery failures by the response to date. :( grumble ! grumble !!
Others may want to throw in some images of the other displays that aren't covered to date.

There were quite a few ordinary buses on display too, along with many mini types.

Looks like no one (OK, including me) took photos of them

If they were like the BCI we haven't missed anything new. I hope the others were more honest in describing their buses though.

Tonyp, I thought you'd be all over the Hino Poncho low floor displayed at the show. Steps only for the rearmost seats. I'm tired of seeing seniors having to clamber up and down Rosas and Coasters community buses. The solution is here for the group that would benefit most from a low floor bus.

Absolutely. I think some time ago on another thread we discussed the accessibility problem of seniors and minibuses but this hadn't arrived on the market at that time. I guess the question will be whether it will be affordable and viable for some owners.

Advised the price would be circa $200k. The list price for Rosas and Coasters is around $120k, so we'll have to wait and see if it dents that market. Trouble is the sub $100k crappy import Golden Dragons rip off designs for the Coaster which seem to be popping up for community operators trying to save a buck.

At that price Daniel ,I don't think the Poncho will deny Coaster or Rosa many sales.$80K is just too big a gap for most community transport operators..
You are right about the Golden Dragon though. But with all cheap things you get what you pay for over the vehicle's life.Much larger maintainence cost ,more downtime and less vehicle longetivity.

Anyone got the rundown on Purtills OB CAC

I recall a tour I did at Deniliquin maybe year 2000 , fuelled up at Purtills and used their truck wash , I recall seeing the CAC in a holding yard next to the servo
with a for sale sign in its front window , I also think I recall incorrectly because I thought they had a few of these old OB's forsale in the yard.

So did Purtill have more than one because the historical list seems to only suggests one.
So on Purtills website it looks like they still own the OB which they call Rosie , good to see they spent the time to restore and keep.
Have to be one of my favourite bodies.
