Norfolk Island Buses

Post by LocoLes »

Have you dreamed having a holiday without regular bus transport :?: The ideal spot is Norfolk Island reached by Boeing 737 sized aircraft from Australia [or New Zealand or New Caledonia]. Norfolk Island is a paradise and measures roughly 8km by 5km, is hilly, very scenic and with numerous mostly sealed roads. Getting back to buses, the only buses sited during visits in 1992 and 1996 were those in use by tourist operators using Toyota Coaster sized minibuses but there was a large Hino and 2 Ford normal control buses. One Ansair Bedford was at Emily Bay however not in use as a bus. It is interesting to realize that most items, vehicles included, arrive by sea and craned over the side of the supply ship on top of lighters strapped alongside each other and towed ashore by motor launch. Weather permitting, supply ships anchor approximately one kilometre offshore at either Kingston or Cascades and visitors to the island watch the proceedings from their rental vehicles. The largest town is inland, Burnt Pine, and the airport during the above period was serviced by jet either Ansett, Air New Zealand or Norfolk Air.

My photos in this post include another view of Pinetree Tours' Hino at Cascade, three lighters ready to be launched to meet a cargo ship, four photographs of two ships anchored offshore unloading cargo and five airport scenes including a close-up of the airport from the highest point, Mount Pitt. :)

When I was there some years ago I was watching the unloading at Cascade when one of the lighters overloaded with roof insulation bats capsized with the load believed lost forever.

Hi Fleet Lists,

I reckon the sea must be really deep in that area and no doubt a ship would drag an anchor that possibly cannot reach the ocean floor. The lighters look quite fragile and I have a 'Rambler's Guide to Norfolk Island' publication which has a photo of the Ansair Bedford [see my photo] arriving on Norfolk perched on top of the centre lighter with another empty lighter strapped alongside. :)
