I'm thinking it could be a WW2 wartime 'Austerity' bus, as they were later used by the DRTT (Department of Road Transport and Tramways) as maintenance vehicles or workers' huts. That would explain why it was Wolli Creek per way yard.

I realise that, but it could have been on an 'Austerity' bus chassis, unless it was simply placed on a trailer of some sort.

It's a mock up R1 class corridor tram which I think was built for the 1951 50th Anniversary of Federation parade. In the background can be seen stacks of brand new bogies for the cancelled R1 order.Story has it that the crowns from the Royal Visit trams and buses were also stored in this shed after they had been removed.

yes dave thats what the late john burgess told me then he thought they were moved to the wooden sheds at sheas creek at alexandria next to the canal........................but those sheds went up in flames about 20 years ago I think! john helped make those crowns as a young apprentice, also it was one of the first times thy used a new product called fiberglass and they used it on a 'P' CLASS tram roof and I think its the p class at loftus! one of johns wishes was to see a "ROYAL CROWN" on one of the trams at loftus!

That photo was cropped from a larger image, which did in fact have an austerity bus in the distance. The windows did look similar, but this a very basic body, so would not have been too hard to replicate
