Ex. Busways MAN 16.240 170

Postby Randommann » Wed Jul 04, 2012 10:29 pm

Hello All,

Here are some pictures of ex. Busways 170, which is now owned by the Wicklow Hotel in Armidale to transport drunk customers home. Its registration is BP 06 DR. When not in use, it is parked in the Kelly's Transport Truck Yard, located on the Bundarra Road.

Sorry for the slightly grainy quality.

This vehicle is part of a batch of 25 which are being withdrawn at the moment; When I last checked the fleet lists only 16 are left in service with Busways. It has a Custom Coaches body of 1989.

I would have to say that the door layout is rather interesting and unique for a bus that age.

It was at Port Macquarie at withdrawal, with the images suggesting that it was a school bus in its last years... Would it have been anywhere other than Port Macquarie in its life?

Does anyone know about what capacity the engine is and whether its turbocharged or not? From the name of the chassis, it has 240 HP and I assume by that stage of power it would be turbocharged. For a high-floor bodied bus without A/C, it must go like an angry cat with rockets attached to it. I was told that these units have very nice ZF noises.

Thanks,
The Man of Randomness

These buses are my favourite of all time. They sound great and go well (not necessarily stop that well but...). 170 spent most of its life at Camden. They are not turbo charged. The engine is about 11.2 litres *I think*.

Definitely a reason to get smashed at the pub if that will take you home!

Thanks for the answers! I'd love to ride on it one day...
The engines in these MANs must be a lot better than the OM 447h engines in Mercedes-Benz O405s, as the latter produce less power (205 HP) and are at a bigger capacity (11.9 litres). Mind you, If I remember correctly the STA's PMC160 O405s have more powerful OM 447h engines which are roughly 240 HP instead of the standard 205 HP.

The current 16.240 only has about a 7 litre engine I think! but it is turbocharged big time.

They don't make 'em like these 'old' units any more sadly.

On a rego check the last four digits of the VIN shown are 0112 which according to our fleet lists belong to 165 and not 170.

It could be a VIN screw-up from MAN. MAN screwed up before in the early 1980s with some VINs on Brisbane's MAN SL200s, causing some of them to have the same VIN as others in the fleet. It may have happened again with these vehicles...

It just could also just as likely be a mistake by the R&MA or the Fleet Lists, too.

:( :(
I am giving an educated guess that the current 16.240 is actually a (Obviously low-floor) Midibus, as the 15.220 (Which is probably 1 step lower) is. :(

The VIN issue has been resolved - both buses have a VIN ending in 0112.

How come they don't stop that well? Dodgy brakes?
Do they have those silly little car pedals like one other MAN at Revesby?

They didn't stop well? The ones that I worked on and drove at Glendenning had no issues in that regard!

The rear door is in that spot becuse the engine position didn't allow the door to be in the middle area like Dick Rowe (and so many others) had happening at the time. As a result they were built in the same fashion as the old B58s that he had.

I found they didn't stop as well as the O405's untill the standard MAN rear booster was ditched and a 30/30 fitted.

Whenever I venutred out into the Campbelltown area years ago, I loved to hear these things screaming down the main drag parallel to the Campbelltown Station. I've only ever been on one and that was during the Sydney 2000 Olympics, the bus left the temporary Olympic bus terminus at Liverpool Station (now a TAFE building) and went out to the shooting range venue at Cecil Hills.

Arent they the same as Shorelink's MAN underfloors with that nice exhaust crak they emit? They have varieties wit hthree different body styles (PMC 160, PMC Adelaide with the wierd exhaust stack and Custom Coaches mk88)
One thing I don't like about them is the high looking driver position.
I am theorising that they have 11.4l engines just like their MAN Sl202 counterparts , but with sports exhausts fitted to give htem their "crack".
Dying for a drive of an 0305 to relive old memories.

It was merely an attempt at humour, given the current/previous owner's poor effort at removing Busways identification.

Hello All,

Today I found 170 outside the Wicklow Hotel at Dumaresq Street and took some shots of it. It is probably being prepared to carry lots of drunk customers tonight! These are my first 1000 pixel wide pictures on this board. Enjoy!

I could see some of the inside through the windows of the bus, which seemed to be in reasonable condition although there were some sticky tape patches on the walls. The seats are a bit squished in, I think, and there is not much leg room. Most of the seats are not torn and are in great nick. This will probably change during the next ten years of pub use, though...

You'll have to wait for about a year before this happens! But when I finally can, I'll certainly be willing to do a recording, no doubt!

Do you mean ex. 1932? That one belongs to a completely different pub, the St. Kilda Hotel. This one is used by the Wicklow Hotel. The St. Kilda Hotel have no plans of replacing their Merc anytime soon (It was one of the worst Mark Is after all, so they may as well get all possible use out of it). There is also a Nissan UD that belongs to the White Bull Hotel which I should also find and have a look at.
