MO5545 a coach counterpart to the Bedford bugeye trucks, which often had 2 stroke Detroit engines.

Re: Batterhams Cessnock
The Batterham's RFW is very probably the unit that was written off in it's early life.
The chassis finished up with Firefly in Melbourne, via some heavy repair work by Re-Car chassis engineering works in Sunshine, Melbourne.
It was driven by a very game driver all the way from Melbourne to Brisbane for rebodying by Domino Hedges with a very unusual but distinctive coach body.(photos anybody?)
Why was the driver game?
Because the chassis had a 3-5 ply driver's cabin fitted around a Namco plastic chair lashed to the chassis. The cabin resembled a port-a-loo with a perspex front window fitted.
Give that a shot in 2017 ..... you'd finish up in gaol !

Re: Batterhams Cessnock
Back in the '70's when I was briefly at John A Gilberts in Sydney that's how chassis were delivered, minus the cabin and perspex window. I recall a Bedford chassis delivery from their premises to Glenorie Bus Service at Dural. The said plastic chair affixed to the chassis and a 'Snoopy' lookalike at the wheel with goggles, a 'Bee Gee's scarf blowing in the wind, and a bomber jacket. More of a Tiger Moth pilot look than a bus driver. Trade plate affixed of course. But Melbourne to Brisbane, well yes that's something else again.
Think for yourself, while it's still legal !

Re: Batterhams Cessnock
Why did the bus company need to take physical possession of the chassis before going off to the body builders?
I would take it as given for the chassis maker to deal with the body builder of the operator's choice without that caper.
It would have been a mystifying sight to onlookers.

Re: Batterhams Cessnock
On driving chassis to bodybuilders, Simon Bath who now holds a senior management role with Volvo was, in the early 1980s selling Tourmasters and Domino bodies for Domino. Simon sold the Treurs at West Bankstown a Tourmaster body to be fitted to a new Hino RV chassis which they purchased in Sydney on the proviso that he (Simon) drove the chassis to Brisbane for bodying. . With temporary seat, and in recognition of the distance, temporary seat belt fitted (as well as wearing a crash helmet) Simon drive the bare RV chassis to Brisbane for bodying. He told me that it was easy to take off in 3rd gear, but the lack of weight made wheel spin a constant problem when taking off. Yes, I agree, if you got as far as Mount White with a set up like this in 2017, that's about where they would lock you up ....

Re: Batterhams Cessnock
Would have been a slow trip back from Morisset over the gap to Cessnock in the Bedfords.
edit , probably first gear empty.
