Leopard 1607 found in Harden

Post by fearnes3848 »

A few years ago, I spotted a MK II Leopard sitting in a paddock in Harden and as I was passing through yesterday I decided to stop and get a few photos.

At the moment I have a couple of hundred photos of Fearnes buses dating back to the 1920's that I am putting into an album and I was also interested to find two photos which I also believe is 1607 parked beside the wash bay at the Fearnes depot in Wagga, I actually remember it being parked there when I was a kid .

On the Leyland Leopard/Smithfield Mark 2 disposal lists it shows that 1607 was owned by Fearnes at used at the Wagga depot for parts, it was later sold to an owner in Harden as a shed and it is currently just sitting in a paddock in Harden where it has been located for some time now.

It appeared to be reasonably complete, judging by that interior photo taken at Fearnes, it looks like the engine had been removed. From the road it looked like it had a stack of parts sitting behind the drivers seat.

Does anyone have a photo of 1607 in service?

Going by the desto showing on the No3 box, it finished at a Northern Depot, probably Brookvale or Mona Vale.

According to fleet-list that 1607 was obtain by Fearnes but unused the went to L & S Cameron Harden for possible restoration then to a unknown owner Harden to be used as a shed. But nothing else about when it was withdrawn from government service.

I did my leopard test in 1607 out of Brookvale depot in 1987.
My driving instructor picked this one out purposely because of its superior mechanical condition.
I also remember seeing this bus beside a house as I drove through Harden many times about 5 years ago and then the house was demolished and the bus removed.

Back in the days of the DGT and PTC, the unions had quite an influence in regards to the design of government buses.

The MK I (Green Leopards) where built by PMC with split screens on both sides with a window between the OS windscreen and the drivers window for greater visibility and to eleminate the blindspot, the split screen was designed to eliminate the glare of the sun.

When the MK II (Blue Leopards) were built by PMC, a flat screen was used on the NS to create the space needed to increase the width of the front door, however, the flat screen was not used on the OS, as the unions wanted the split screen to be used on the OS to stop the glare of the sun for the drivers and the corner window was also kept between the drivers window for greater visibility, the same windscreen design was utilised in the Atlanteans and the design was not altered in the Smithfield MK II Leopards.

Yes AEC Decker is correct, 1607 was a Brookvale bus, according to my UTA fleetlist book.

One of the mental byproducts of living in the country for a while is when you approach something the like this, your first instinct is   SNAKES!!

How much would a bus in 1607's condition cost? I have heard of Leopard's being bought for around $2000.
