Murrays Asian Invasion
With the arrival and now everyday use of the BCI "Explorers" on the Canberra run I though it would be a good time to post pics of Murrays Asian built fleet for some sort of comparrison.
First a few pics of the not to successful Ankai's and then the new toys, the BCI "Explorer's".

The Ankai might look better if it didn't have that white "moustache" at the front
The second photo with the cab in shadow does make it look real weird.

Just think of Bus Australia and there Bovas and look at the Chinese built Ankai and decide which coach was ugly.

Good shots - I saw a two axle new BCI for Murray's last night. Has anyone else seen one of these?

They acquired a couple from TP Oceania a while back, and I saw about 6 new ones lined up in the depot a couple of weeks ago, I'd guesss they are replacing the MANs.Ben O wrote:Good shots - I saw a two axle new BCI for Murray's last night. Has anyone else seen one of these?
Murrays have around 100 coaches to replace, so I'm guessing you will be seeing a lot more BCIs in coming months.

Re: Murrays Asian Invasion
Are Murrays running low on capital to be turnng to these instead of their traditional quality European sourced equipment.
These surely can't measure up to those standards. Those Ankais look like a giant vacuum cleaner and are horrid looking and are plainly made to Asian tastes.

Re: Murrays Asian Invasion
The problem, as far as I can see, is that the current Murrays fleet is mostly between 15 and 20 years old. Even with Euro chassis (MAN, Merc & Scania) and Australian built (PMCA & Austral-Denning) bodywork, they won't fetch enough resale to be able to buy a new coach of comparable quality (think Scania K380 or Merc O500 with Custom or Coach Design or Mills Tui bodies). In fact, Murrays would be having to look at a huge outlay of money to update the fleet from where it is now, even taking into account the resale value of their current coaches.
Stay safe. Drive safe.

I really am loving your hate on the asian coach builders.
I personally think that they look quite nice.
Thanks,

As far as I know is that the quality of Chinese export models are better than those for China.
Doesn't suprise me that Murrarys bought BCI buses but for Ankai it might be a nice try.......

I really think Murrays should have waited and seen other operator's experiences with these complete unknown budget price coaches before committing to them ,unless they only plan to keep them short term and lose a whole heap of money on depreciation .
They aren;'t supporting local industry either unless importers count.

Re: Murrays Asian Invasion
Murrays employee told me they have Cummins engines, Allison 6 speed autos and ZF hubs and diffs, so hardly an unkown factor on the part of the running gear. He also mentioned that their performance is far superior to the Scanias they are replacing. These specs were for the Canberra-Sydney Express ones, which also feature a steerable tag.
Wont be long before we see these chinese bodies come into the route sector in large numbers. To be honest, i don't think they could be much worse than the current CB60's being delivered, the quailty control on these buses is non exsistent.

Re: Murrays Asian Invasion
Australians will choose anything that is cheaper, forgetting the bigger picture.
Sure it might have a powerful truck motor pushing it along but can we trust the structural integrity of the chassis and body frame to stand up to our poor road standards long term?Plus I understand that while the engines are U.S made Cummins motors,I read somewhere that the ancillaries on at least some Chinese made buses are Chinese sourced and prone to failure.
I just don't see them lasting as long as the Scanias did.

Re: Murrays Asian Invasion
It is Murray's reputation and bottom line that will suffer if these coaches don't work out, so it is not our problem to critisize.
Perhaps it is a question of too many accountants, and not enough industry experience, dictating their operating policies.

The title is not of good taste either, let alone the aesthetic designs of the coaches.

Re: Murrays Asian Invasion
Let me see, the coaches are Asian and they are invading the Murrays fleet so what else would have been a good title?cal_t wrote:The title is not of good taste either, let alone the aesthetic designs of the coaches.
I have not had any negative comments on the title, actualy there are quite a few people who think its a good accurate title and some of these people are of Asian background.
Had they been coaches from europe I would have could it the European invasion, would you find that in bad taste aswell?

Re: Murrays Asian Invasion
Cummins engines, ZF gearbxes and axles are hardly unknown. Anything else on them, and I mean any part is easily ordered from China if you know where to look. Couple that with competitive pricing and quality control that is almost to our standard and I know where I'd be putting my money!
