June 30th will be the last day of the Monorail.

I wonder why they couldn't just great rid of the part around the SEC and extend the monorail tracks to somewhere like Bondi or Boardway or somewhere without demoshing it.

Wouldn't it be perfect if they charge $4 for a trip to bondi.I think people might use it but the only issue is it will be hard work to figure out a route for the monorail to travel from the City CBD to bondi and the cost will be expensive.

Well anyway R.I.P Monorail.

Monorails, esp this one, are NOT mass transit options for long, heavily trafficed routes.

Sydney's monorail to make its final stop on June 30 next year

SYDNEY'S controversial monorail has officially come to the end of the line with Transport Minsiter Gladys Berejiklian revealing it will stop operating on June 30 next year.

why not do somthing like the Chongqing Rail Transit 55.6 km and Shanghai Maglev Train 30.5 km.i'm sure the CBD to bondi is less then 15km running down oxford st.

Toyko's monorail line serves heaps of customers which i don't see why didn't sydney monorail do the same back before it began.

Well okay - it was a bit confusing given we're quite close to June 30 2012 but the monrail is still clearly running......

The Tokyo monorail is basically a feeder to the airport from the city rail network. It traverses mainly industrial and port land, not residential. With all the outcry over something as "discrete" as our version, I shudder to think how something of Tokyo's scale would go down in residential and commercial areas in the Bondi corridor.

Other similar systems in Japan have been built PRIOR to, or in conjunction with, local development, so do tend to fit in better with their surroundings.

Is it just me or do none of the above have anything to do with Monorails?

Must be just you.

I could see monorails in all those links (preceded by ads).

They do highlight how intrusive the structures can be, although they are designed to be severe earthquake proof.

1. The Lord mayor and some pollies don't like it
2. At 25 years old , Mechanically it is getting worn out and needs replacing
3. The trackage around Chinatown is allegedly in the way of proposed new developments.

Too costly to run as well

And not many people use it.

I don't see how the monorail is in the way other then that curve right next to the sec.

They could make a extension from the carpark to right next to the Sydney markets then make a turn back to it's route again.i'm sure there has to be room.

I don't know what it costs to run, but I understand the operators don't loose money on it.

It seems to get acceptable loadings, there have always been standing passengers when I have ridden it.

It could be rerouted to the other side of the tramline, but the government is looking for an excuse to pull it down, rather than the expense of doing it up. Picture 2488 above shows the "offending" area.

Wouldn't it be better if they replaced the old monorails with new ones and start refurbish the tracks after changing the SEC section.

They could make travel passes just like ferries, trams and buses to make it more affordable.

The tracks are quite possibly getting near "life expired", so they would probably have to replace the lot, to a higher engineering standard.

Making it "free" would simply attract more patronage than it could handle. A lot of light rail patronage now seems to be one stop travellers who might previously have walked. There is a lot of "free" travel now between Central and Capitol Square/Paddy's that never existed before.

its a shame that the monorail is going, when i was in sydney earlier this year i used it extensively as we stayed at Darling Harbour and each train was very well patronised, this sounds to me like another Liberal/National Party money saving enterprise at the expense of Public Transport.

I will spent money on travelling the monorail for the last time this year.

Could i ask if anyone know if you can travel two times around the course by paying $5?????

would want to take my Camera and start flimming on the first round and take pictures the second round.Just to remember the moments of the monorail.

I agree it basically takes you no where but still it takes you somewhere at least like pitt st to the power house museum eventho you can walk there.
