Staffing levels on NZ trains

Postby simonl » Fri Apr 06, 2012 5:12 pm

I've read that Auckland and Wellington have some of the most heavily staffed trains I've ever heard of, due to a number of conductors in addition to the driver. Are there any plans to remove the conductors and would that be DOO or is there a guard as well?

Auckland 1Train Manager & 1 PO ( Passenger Operator) on a 6 carriage train & they will be removed by 5th August when the Hop Card that is used on buses comes into effect.is that heavily staffed? i work on them & i do the same shift every day & one carriage goes free every day, 6 carriage trains carry 1087 passengers when full, Auckland Transport tell us when the train is more then 90 per cent full NOT to Collect fares as it is a safety hazard>

Hmm, that's not too bad. I'd read that there would be at least a conductor per carriage. And only 4 months to go to DOO! Sydney and Brisbane don't look like achieving it in 4 years.

What about Wellington?

Ummm no, more like 1TM and 3 PO's, not sure where you got that from, I work on these trains all day too, and never had any less than 2 PO's on a 6 car train, extreme evening and very early morning excepted, and that is when you are using only 1 or 2 cars anyway...

I have worked on the Trains extensively in many roles in both Wellington and Auckland. From experience, you can expect an onboard crew member for every 1 to 1.5 cars, in Wellington, most peak trains are 1 per 2 cars. However Wellington do not sell 10 trips or Monthlies on board whereas auckland do (for 10 trips) or did until recently (monthlies).

From experience also, Wellington's trains are more crowded during the peaks than Auckland, however off peak that situation is reversed. One of the trains I ran in Wellington was a 9 coach Red Set from Taita, and that regularly brought in well over 1200. A 6 coach SA would struggle to carry more than about 950, without being overloaded.

Also, Auckland is not going Driver Only, at least not until the electrics are fully running. However the revenue collection activities will reduce, and the requirements for PO's will drop. However Onboard staff are not being eliminated entirely.

Okay so that is one train, not all of them like you suggest. I think I know which service you mean and that is one of the ones I don't work on my roster, however your train is very much the exception - very few trains run with that few staff...
