They retainted the good old Candy stripes and were in Wellington in 1992/3 and in Auckland by 1998. They old their NZ ops to Infratil in 2005 for nominal $250 million.
To my knowledge from living and using stagecoach buses in Aucklaknd. I think they had quite the okay service. I found the phone and email replys were top rate and their drivers? Well lets just say drivers will be drivers

According to scottish passengers ,stagecoach were once the best company ever to serve the public, nowadays they get the same stick as firstgroup and the rest...i think the public expect too much nowadays from bus companies.

It all just basically comes down to the changing ways of ownership. Bus companies of the past were set up by families to serve the people. Today they are set up by busimess men the thought of money making  It's sad, but there are still loads of good family owned and operated companies out there. If government lay's off the red tape a bit and private investores keep their hands of then I think there are a few good companies out there that are really good.
As for the public we've got to look at the fact that high fuel prices and densely populated areas have seen the near death of cars and forced people to catch the bus or train. People are always expecting a low floor, air conditioned, clean and a seat they don't have to share when they get on the bus  ? Oh well I'm sure if passenger numbers keep going up then perceptions may change? :?

I think the model has changed over the years from a pre-July 1991 era of public ownership running as a subsidised taxi service, to a post-July 1991 of completely for-profit services (with a minimum of subsidies if any at all), to what we have now which is moving more toward the centre of a true Public Private Partnership.

Just my 2 cents.

Surely Money-making companies like Infratil/NZ bus can do nothing but ruin the good reputation of our urban public transport.

Well that tendering system did not bugger too much though,it's just the way how marketing system works, money talks... However the goverment should enhance their legislations in order to supervise the behaviors of these PT-related companies.

Lol   , typical. Well his has two reasonably large firms down here so I wouldn't mind seeing him drive a 12.223 smilie (not like the 900's of course)

That's exactly what the recent PT legislation passed in Parliament was all about; providing the regional councils will more powers to regulate PT activities.

I've yet to see any city step up and say that they want to take back the PT business. I wonder why?

Nice bunch of pics there, Olympian! :o It seems I shall have to dig up some more of my pics of Auckland and Wellington buses in Stagecoach colours. When I made my first trip to NZ in May last year, almost everything in Wellington was still in Stagecoach livery, and all the drivers wore Stagecoach uniforms. In Auckland, things were different, with North Star buses appearing. I took an instant liking to that livery, although most of the buses at the time you can forward on to the nearest scrapper! Being from Sydney, I'm used to 2-axle buses such as K series Scanias, Hino CM and RG (not that I like the RG chassis), Leyland Leopard and Tiger, Volvo B10M, B10B, B12B, and M.A.N SL202 and 16.240. The 2-axle M.A.N 12.223 does not impress me at all, and the 17.223 at 3-axles and around 12.5m is a joke, especialy considering one of my wotrk buses is a 12m Leopard! :P I was impressed and ammused by the M.A.N 16.200, the SL202, and the SG220s in Auckland. I have photographed, but not ridden on, the new Scanias running in Wellington and Auckland, and have ridden the 3-axle Trollies in Wellington, but only for a short distance.

I know NZ have ridiculous axle loading laws, but a 12 tonne GVM chassis as a general purpose route bus does little to impress me. :(
New website up and running, showing mostly trains and some trams.
