Open House Melbourne.
This has been running for 10 years, with a diversity of sites and buildings available: cultural, historic, grand architecture, modern, technical. Each year some old favourites vanish, but newer ones replace them. Queuing can be a problem, and there is a booking system for the most popular or most unable to cope. Last year it crashed at 8.30; by 10.30 everything had gone.
This is part of a world set: Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide are participants. Recently Geelong came onboard, and this year Ballarat.

Transport and technical. Generally, transport enthusiasts like the technical sites, particularly the substations. I usually meet a few friends, conceivably several contributors to this group are regular attendees.
ArtPlay: Former electric-driver training school.
Substation: Former Newport substation, with lots of elements surviving.
Federation Square. More technical than transport.
Melbourne Central Unlocked Tours: More technical than transport.
Russell Place Substation: Technical, and always with long queues, and featuring a preserved working mercury-arc rectifier. Arrive at 9.00 with a picnic breakfast.
Signal: Former Flinders St signalbox A.
Substation 'J' : as for Russell Place. There have been two different portions open in different years. I am not sure which part this time.
Public Record Office Victoria : Where lots of railway and other researchers meet weekly.
Mission to Seafarers : interesting architecture and function, and refreshments available. Some good historical shipping photos and memorabilia.
Port of Melbourne Boat Tours : see the working docks from a different viewpoint. Recommended.
Hawthorn Tram Depot : Good, and easy.
D-Division, Pentridge : technical.
Luna Park : transport and technical.
Prahran Mechanics' Institute Victorian History Library : Houses the ARHS library, and it will have a display. Cinema and Theatre Historical Society is also running a display.
Melbourne International RoRo & Auto Terminal (MIRRAT) . Newcomer, technical. It may be possible to get there by Garden City bus.
Melbourne City Baths. Technical. A well-known landmark in so many tram photos. I had an excellent tour a few years ago, by the restoration heritage architect.
Rupertswood Mansion : Simply for curiosity. This has been seen on so many train journeys, and had its own station.
Eastern Treatment Plant. Technical.
Royal Historical Society of Victoria: Great art deco, and always with an interesting display. This year: ‘Remembering Melbourne 1850–1960’.
Hisense Arena. I have been to most of the sporting arenas through the years. Public areas, and behind the scenes.
Even if you a remote reader, the excellent online catalog gives you the fun vicariously.
