The use of Smartbuses on weekdays on 219/220 & 600/922/923 is due tight spare ratio of ptv livery buses. While on weekend it is due to a preference to not use the MAN/CB30s.

Out of curiosity, what is the reasoning behind not using the cb30's on weekends?

Transdev #970 sighted broken down on Station Street, just a few hundred metres from Box Hill Central, currently in the hands of mechanics

Cause they are unreilable and not ideal for heavy loads on 219/220. That being said sometimes Heatherton ones do end up out on weekends, but try send Smartbuses out first.

The only thing I never see on the 901 are the Custom Scanias e.g. CB60, CB80 or the others mostly found on the DART runs.

I have, it wasn't uncommon about a year ago. Seem to have migrated back to the 903 and DART.

Are we forgetting that other routes apparently require Smartbus livery. Like routes 600, 922, 923. Sorry for the sarcasm but as I work in Cheltenham, I see more Smartbus livery on these routes than non Smartbus.

Ditto around Doncaster, a Designline Smartbus liveried vehicle on a route 295 passed me on Doncaster Rd not long after 4.30pm. Not uncommon on route 293 either. Annoyingly they seem to turn up regularly on schoolbus runs too. The Whitefriars buses pass me either at Greensborough or in Templestowe and at least half the time they are Smartbus liveried vehicles. Presumably there is a surplus of Smartbus liveried vehicles in peak hour now Smartbus routes are run with PTV liveried vehicles such as the Gemilangs and new Volgrens...

Not exactly, as stated before in case of North Fitzroy & Doncaster they mix up their runs hence Smartbuses appearing on any run. Also given there shortages in general often last bus outs are take whatever left if anything in the yard. If buses only did DART instead being mixed up I think you'll find there would be very few Samrtbus Livery buses left for other work.

Three consecutive 902 arrivals into Chelsea tonight around 7pm were done by Gemilangs - and to think just over 6 months ago seeing one on the route was something to be excited over.

Kind Regards

Hmm, interesting that bus was running fine earlier that morning on its first service for the day whilst I was onboard.

Anyways regarding the fleet mixing, those 5 CB80's are barely on DART these days, more often than not I've seen them on orbitals. Last time I was on one the suspension above the rear felt really off with body constantly wobbling once the bus went above 60~70kph. Moving DART's newer vehicles off has done nothing but increase breakdowns and average fleet age. A MB O405NH broke down on Lonsdale St tonight just before Russell on the outbound. Reliability is still a hit and miss
The smartbus brand is literally dead(just not in a practical sense) under Transdev and nearing half way of their contract I haven't noticed any real service improvement, somewhat a downgrade mostly, particularly communications wise and a non existent cleaning department/regimen.
Depot parking at Doncaster is probably why for the cross utilisation, buses just go into whatever lane/space is available. If you have ever passed the depot after midnight you will see buses spilling down the ramp waiting to moved into free space. The backlog is a result of too many vehicles for too little space now that orbitals operate out of Doncaster.

SmartBus has stagnated for years, I'm still waiting for them to drop the Sunday timetable and replace it with the Saturday one that actually runs later than 9PM. Even non-SmartBus runs like the 220 and 246 finish later on Sundays. Also, even the Saturday timetable is piss poor, with Melbourne's "flagship" buses running every half an hour all day long while the trains are running at three times that.

Sighted a new Gemilang numbered #128 on the Eastlink Fwy at around 4pm today, didn't catch the rego, but it is in PTV livery. Appears to be the same model as the previous delivery (100-116) but can't confirm.

380128 was operating a Box Hill bound route 271 service through Blackburn station tonight. <sarcasm>Thank you to Transdev for running an 8 minute late route 901 to Melbourne Airport out of service from Blackburn making us all wait another 20 minutes in the cold to ensure I could make this observation.</sarcasm>

Oh, and they might want to make sure they fix the broken front seat. Interesting, looks like they are partially held on by Velcro tabs.

The major difference of #128 is that it has a conventional 2-2 seating layout at the back instead of the longitudinal layout seen in the other Gemilangs

Transdev smart bubble bus 658 has been fitted with the loop barrier protection(like the design found in volgrens) and a new slightly revised mesh shield design(replacing the perspex screen),first bus at Transdev with this feature I assume.

Also for some reason when Transdev programmed the most recent desto files, buses equipped with Hanover displays were programmed with a file missing. They managed to program the file for the inbound service 'City 318' but for some reason did not create a file for the outbound service 'Deep Creek 318' which has resulted in drivers using the 'City' file for the outbound trip for the last six months or so.

So it's about as useful as 'Ringwood' being shown on a 380 bus leaving Ringwood station heading towards Croydon. Who designs these things?

Nothing to do with design. It is not being maintained correctly.

Still see a lot of the Custom Evo II Scania K230's with the Southport destination equipment still having issues with destination displays, especially with side and rear units displaying things such as NOT IN RINGWOOD etc.

Also heard a sick Scania at Box Hill during the week, I swear it sounded like a Briggs and Stratton or a Victa and not a Scania.

But credit where credit is due, I had a nice run on the 903 with a great driver, and a nice 0500LE, and some nice pleasant co passengers for a change.

Saw one of the 500 series from Sunshine depot last week broken down on Millers road, driver was told to either drive the bus back with no acceleration or walk back to the depot. Driver last seen huffing and pufffing towards Altona Gate shops.

I would of thought they would at least send out a cab, or someone to pick him up.

Same thing happened to me on Wednesday on the 903. I know traffic can be a factor, but it seems to be consistant.

Speaking of driver changeovers, is it normal for Keysborough drivers to drive up the driveway to the bus shelter for changeover. Surely there legs work well enough to walk.

Not too impressed waiting ten minutes for a late driver changeover on Tuesday.

It happens more often than not when driver changeovers occur at East Doncaster on the 901. In the last month had it happen about 7 times, compared to the one time it worked perfectly. This includes 2pm on a Thursday in the school holidays with seemingly everything running on time in both directions so I would be surprised if it is purely down to traffic conditions and drivers rightly taking their full break when it has started late. To clarify - my view is that I prefer a fully rested driver running late than a partly rested driver leaving on time from a safety point of view. On the other hand, something is very wrong with insufficient recovery in the system given it pretty much has happened every time I pass through East Doncaster on a bus with a driver changeover regardless if it is on time before the changeover or not, and seemingly regardless of time of day.

Then there was the time there was a 10+ minute wait AND the driver got stuck for another 10+ minutes on a non-functioning detector loop turning right into Fitzsimmons Lane...
