Also seen but in the evening peak hour was Dysons bus 729 (Volgren CR228L, Scania) operating a route 251 to Northland with the Transdev driver in 'tour guide' role. Well done to Dysons for actually creating destination files for the routes, with a properly programmed front/side/rear destos for route 251 produced, to Dysons standards.
Shame it wasn't to Transdev standards. A Dysons bus operating a Transdev route with an authentic "Not In Northland" rear destination is not a photo opportunity you are likely to get ever again...

This morning, Nuline 20 worked a 154 Kew Schools service, seen parking at the Doncaster Junction bus bay around 8.15am. Another Nuline bus passed around the same time with a Transdev driver-guide on board heading east along Doncaster Rd.
This evening a Crown Coaster was seen operating a route 282 through Shoppingtown around 5.20pm tonight.

Quite a few cancelations tonight due to operational issues:

R901 from Chisholm TAFE to Dandenong RS will be cancelled from 3.29pm to 5.25pm due to operational issues, apologies for inconvenience
As the 216 from Caroline Springs at 11:04pm, and the 903 from Altona at 12:10am are the last buses for the night on each of those routes, I'm guessing that they would have at least arranged for someone to drive along each route and hand out Cabcharge vouchers to waiting passengers? Unless they just left people stranded late at night...

Transdev seem to leave people stranded when that happens: https://twitter.com/jamesadams7/status/ ... 6388561920

As the person who has been stranded at Kew Junction twice after the last 207 has run out of fuel, they certainly do not provide cabcharge vouchers (I asked for one) or any other sort of help. They did eventually pay for my Uber after many complaints to their customer service, but haven't after the most recent issue.

Noted a few Ventura L113CRL's on various routes at Box Hill and The Pines.

Rode a Dyson's K230UB on route 305 to The Pines.

Saw 803 again heading towards Donvale.

Interesting to see a notable number of Ventura Scania L113CRL's going around including on freeway services, and that Ventura were willing to let Transdev drivers drive them. Probably the only time a Transdev driver is going to get a bus without a flashing check engine light.
Well at least Ventura's semi-retired fleet of Scania L113CRL's are in better condition than most of the Transdev fleet.

This is totally unacceptable and Transdev should be embarrassed. If heavy fines for this incompetence don't apply, they should.

Off the buses: Transdev buses pulled off the road after failing safety blitz
Adam Carey

Melbourne's second biggest bus operator has been ordered to take a dozen of its buses off the road due to serious defects that posed a danger to passengers.

A blitz by safety inspectors on two Transdev bus depots found 33 defective buses, with 12 in such poor condition they were ordered off the road for urgent repairs.

Victoria's transport safety watchdog, Transport Safety Victoria, said it was the highest number of defective buses it had ever taken off the road in a blitz.

Transdev, which operates one-third of Melbourne's bus network under a $1.7 billion contract with the state government, has been forced to hire a mix of buses and coaches from other companies to plug holes in its timetables. It has also reported scores of cancelled services in recent days due to "operational issues".

Transport Safety Victoria said it would increase its inspection regime of Transdev's fleet of buses until it is satisfied the company's maintenance standards are adequate.
It is currently inspecting about 40 buses a day for potential safety problems.

"We are working with Transdev to make sure the immediate safety issues are effectively managed and their safety systems are sufficiently robust to ensure the ongoing safety of their bus services," said Shaun Rodenburg, the acting director of bus safety at Transport Safety Victoria.

Defects included engine and transmission faults, fluid and air leaks, loose fitting panels and suspension faults.

The high number of potentially dangerous faults earned a rebuke from Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan.

"This was not acceptable and we're taking this situation very seriously, as the safety of people travelling on buses is our highest priority," Ms Allan said.

Public Transport Victoria is reviewing the maintenance failures "so we understand the root cause of this issue and stop it from happening again", Ms Allan said.

Manningham resident Stuart McKenzie is a regular passenger on Transdev's DART buses between Doncaster and the city, and said he was concerned to hear that many of the company's buses are unroadworthy.

"When the DART buses were introduced a few years ago they looked quite swish for a while but they don't look as good now, and the graffiti problem has made things worse, but I'm not too fussed about that as long as they are safe and functional," Mr McKenzie said.

Transdev's seven-year contract with the state government is unique among Melbourne bus operators.

It is performance-based, with bonuses and penalties for meeting punctuality and reliability targets, similar to Metro Trains and Yarra Trams.

The decision to put a third of Melbourne's bus routes out to competitive tender was made by Public Transport Victoria in 2013, and was meant to usher in a new improved service level.

However, Transdev has largely failed to meet its performance targets.

Fairfax Media this year revealed using freedom-of-information laws that Transdev had never met its contractual monthly punctuality target of 85 per cent and has overseen an annual decline in those using buses of tens of thousands on key routes.

Under the terms of its contract the company is meant to grow bus passenger numbers on its routes.

Transdev said it was working to get the defective buses back in service, and had repaired four buses already.

Transdev chief executive Warwick Horsley briefed staff that VicRoads inspected its Doncaster and Fitzroy North depots last week and found 33 defective buses.

"All impacted buses have been scheduled for urgent repair. We expect this process to take up to two weeks to complete, with a gradual return to service of around two-three buses per day," he wrote.

"The work now begins to learn from this experience, embed updated procedures and where necessary and ultimately ensure that the events of this week are not repeated."

The Andrews government is contemplating opening up Melbourne's other bus contracts to more competition to improve service standards.

Ventura 801 left Shoppingtown around 8.25am this morning on a route 281 to Deakin, following Ventura 810 on a "school bus" (according to the destination), both operated solely by Transdev drivers.
This afternoon I spotted a Crown coaster at The Pines around 4,30pm on a route 282 as well as a Nuline coach operating a route 159. There was also another NuLine coach departing around the same time turning left into Reynolds Rd, but I didn't catch any details.

Ventura bus 180 (Volgren CR221L, MB O405NH) was operating a 279? service this morning around 7.35am this morning with just a Transdev driver.
The amount of buses laid up at the back of Doncaster depot seems to grow and change daily.

Learn from the experience? It seems PTV has given the bus contract to a company who now admits they haven't learnt yet how to keep their buses roadworthy.

Indeed. Maintenance issues have been raised with Transdev over the past few years, each time they promise to "revise procedures" or something similar. Repairing handlebars with duct tape continues as a maintenance practice despite them saying that they would address this issue in 2014.

Simple solution- preventative maintenance, check things and put them right before they fail. Fix engine check lights when reported and don't wait for breakdowns to occur, check tightness of screws and nuts, change globes when reported, be thorough during services.

Article was in The Age today. I saw a few ex-Grenda buses (still in the old livery) on Transdev routes at Ringwood including a CR221L Merc on a 271. An Optare Solo of all things was also on the 364 to Warrandyte. I also saw a Designline bubble SmartBus on the 380 about twenty minutes ago.

Nuline buses out again today. The most interesting observation I have is that the 8.25am from Shoppingtown route 282 was operated by a Crown coaster AND a Transdev Optare Solo following immediately behind...

Apparently Crown have 4 minis on the 280/282.They would be very familiar with those routes having operated them on numerous occasions. The route choices for the Solos are interesting ,given their limited capacity.Transdev would need to put them on shifts where there is little school flows.

That is truly staggering...

I was thinking with fewer buses on the road there would be a greater probability of normal Transdev buses on most services, but seems like I should find my camera battery charger after all...
