Quick question - train timetables on platforms

Post by lunchbox »

Sydney stations lost their sheet (poster) timetable displays on platforms in 2013. There are moves for their re-instatement.
Does Melbourne still have sheet timetables on railway platforms?

There is actually a PC/TV screen hanging off the concourse ceiling telling the next departure to what station from what platform in how much minutes.
I'd post any important, bus-related links I had, but they're outdated anyways.

There is also a summary on each platform: just the departure times. However, the down platform shows only the down times; the up shows only the up. Efficient travelling is to check the time of departure for the return when leaving on the arrival, and that isn't possible with this set up.

I can remember such boards in Sydney but they seem to have been removed.

They were still there as of yesterday.

I think the topic is about the informational panels showing complete timetables for the lines using each station, People might want to know about services later in the day, or on other days.

Perhaps some stations still have them but I'm sure some aren't there any more.

Maybe we are talking about different things. Perhaps you mean "next train to City" display, rather than the general listing of the next services?

There is one of the former at Penrith just inside the barriers. It used to show the next 3 trains to the City, and whether they were "Limited Stops" (suburban) or "Express" (BMT). Since being "hopified" it only shows countdown time and platform number. You can't tell which are the express services. There was one at Blacktown, too, can't see why they would have removed it. Maybe also Parramatta?

I thought we were talking about the display which lists every station, what platform and how long to wait. Remember that one?

Parramatta used to have a board which listed every station in Sydney alphabetically, and showed the time for the next departure to each of those stations, where there was a direct service.

It was amusing because it included CIRCULAR QUAY, and there was one service which left Parra at about 23:30 each night, and this was shown all day.

They really need to have something like this in city stations, it would be much easier than expecting people to look at multiple screens to find their station.

But that one is gone now. I can remember Liverpool having such a board and a few others. Don't know if any are left.

I think Parra;s went when they did the big upgrade a few years ago.

There is a a similar theme for the ferries at CQ; certainly makes it easy to find the wharf you want, without having to know which line it is on.

Which is strange, because the board was in the Eastern Concourse IIRC. The upgrade was to the West Concourse. Or perhaps there were two boards.
