Even Melbourne's Skybus operator is backing a rail link to Melbourne Airport.
SkyBus director Michael Sewards said with projected patronage numbers increasing annually at Melbourne Airport, by 2030 "the best mass transit solution would require a mix of options including a rail link".
"SkyBus will clearly have a major role to play in this mass transit mix," he said.
"SkyBus' current annual passenger numbers for this financial year are at 3.4 million. SkyBus is currently planning for passenger numbers to increase to 5 million over the next three years and seven million by 2020," Mr Sewards said.
He said in the past four years SkyBus' share of airport visitors had grown from 7 per cent to 10 per cent.
Mr Sewards said Public Transport Victoria and SkyBus were discussing how Myki could be used on SkyBus and in March 2015 Skybus would introduce double decker buses to its airport fleet.

Lugging suitcases up the stairs might not go down too well with passengers, and many would be reluctant to leave them downstairs where they could not keep watch on them.

Re: Double Deckers for Skybus
You don't take your luggage with you on double deckers. Most setups have cameras facing luggage hold area and there are video screens upstairs so that you can monitor for thieves.
Nuggets.

What chassis will SkyBus purchase? Enviro 500H?
Re: Double Deckers for Skybus
Bustech was recently visiting Skybus with their demo decker. So that could be a hint i suppose.....CityRail wrote:What chassis will SkyBus purchase? Enviro 500H?

Do Skybus use Dudley St and Footscray Rd to access Citylink?
If so what height is the rail overpass on Dudley St?
High enough to get a double decker under?

The Dudley Street underpass has a 4.3 metre clearance - should be just enough to get a 'decker underneath, otherwise they'll probably use Spencer Street and Dynon Road instead. The Cap a tan wrote:Do Skybus use Dudley St and Footscray Rd to access Citylink?

Height of that bridge is 4.3M.The Cap a tan wrote:Do Skybus use Dudley St and Footscray Rd to access Citylink?

High enough for Rockleigh Tous MCW and Enviro500 for RRL project replacement.
That shouldn't be a problem for other double deckers.

Re: Double Deckers for Skybus
Inbound buses approach Southern Cross this way. The bridge has a 4.3m clearance, around the same height as the bus.The Cap a tan wrote:Do Skybus use Dudley St and Footscray Rd to access Citylink?

Buses leaving the City generally go up Spencer St and use the Dynon Rd on-ramp - this would be a workable alternative for inbound buses if the overpass is deemed a tight fit.
Kind Regards

No doubt Skybus would investigate all the available options.Apollo wrote:Bustech was recently visiting Skybus with their demo decker. So that could be a hint i suppose.....CityRail wrote:What chassis will SkyBus purchase? Enviro 500H?
The CDi might be there for evaluation, but does not necessarily indicate a preference. Even TfNSW seems to be looking at alternatives.

Scania K320UD with Volgren Optimus body should be the only option until the volvo B9TL have successfully make the national whatever agency called to raise the GVW up for 3axle buses.

The report on the Hillsbus Optimus DD mentioned that it was "legal in Victoria, but not NSW".

I traveled on the service a couple of weeks ago (with my wife) and talking to drivers and other staff suggested that the DD's were about 4 weeks away (then). One comment made was that there were 4 "normal" length DD's coming + 2 longer ones??

At this stage, the four normal ones are at least a reality. The first one should be arriving ahead of the rest shortly.

It would be quicker to go via Dynon Road into the city as well, wouldn't it?Craig wrote:Inbound buses approach Southern Cross this way. The bridge has a 4.3m clearance, around the same height as the bus.The Cap a tan wrote:Do Skybus use Dudley St and Footscray Rd to access Citylink?
