• Tasmanian Bus Observations - JAN > JUN 2015

Tasmanian Bus & Coach Society NEWS As some will be aware, the Society have been evicted from our premises in Glenorchy. This has put a big dent in our restoration plans, as vehicles had to relocated to all points around the City. yoda has been kind enough to store a couple, whilst #134 will be on display @ TTMS in the short term. The BIGGEST problem was finding storage for #52 (AEC/Denning) Fortunately, Michael Larissey of Tasmanian Redline Coaches, has kindly allowed the Society to store the AEC (undercover) until other premises found, or framework restoration commences.
Most of the displays the Society attends have been completed for the year, so next event (of importance) is the Annual Tour > NW Coast. Just a friendly reminder for those attending, EMAIL > angela.robins@bigpond.com confirming attendance, start location (HBA/LST) and accommodation preference.

That's very sad to hear... Hopefully the TBCS will find somewhere else to call home very soon.

Minor changes for Metro Hobart - timetable adjustments and route alterations to Rokeby/Clarendon Vale services as of Sunday.
Part of this has seen #230 return to the main fleet from Opossum Bay and is replaced by #726.

Cresswell 9 went to O'Neil at Cygnet. Supposed to be for parts for one of the ex Dyson Hinos, but expired on the journey including the main part required.

Jamie, I think you would by now have just about every Cresswell Coaches (Hobart) photo in existence.... I'm sure you have a camera and access to a vehicle? Maybe time to venture out and get some photos, as opposed to asking repeatedly on the forum. I will provide you with what I can when I can and am able too.

Well, the ANNUAL Enthusiast Tour has been done and dusted for another year WHEW What can only be said, as another success, with numerous POSITIVE feedback from various quarters. THANK YOU for all the compliments This year's ran relatively smoothly, except for an overzealous OPERATOR who has lost ALL concept of time Kept the mainlanders on their toes though From a variety of old & new, from classic & opulence, the vehicles selected, generated huge amounts of interest, and I'm sure from ONE participant (Mr Obsessed ), I thought we were carrying a CHILD, he was so excited
AGAIN, the OPERATORS across Tasmania have opened their doors to us "nuts", and I'm certainly appreciative of their generosity, but you also notice their "participation" creeping in nowdays, with the excitement generated by our visits.
But to ME, the highlight was the feedback from the meals (particularly the 1st day) as I'll admit, I was hesitant about mere sandwiches, cake & tea/coffee for a lunch stop (for a group). HOW WRONG WAS I From homemade pastries/savouries + sandwiches + homemade sweets, THIS was the talking point of the whole tour, AND the setting was superb. A VERY BIG thank you to Margaret Wilson from Chudleigh Store and to Jan Bingley for talking me into it. Again, on Day 2, homemade morning tea, with scones and cakes from Kerger Coaches, make these visits more personal, and makes you realise these operators enjoy welcoming our group into their "home", thank you Rachel Kerger (and helpers)
Once more, Tasmania threw up some "classic" coaches of yesterday, some beautifully preserved, like Steven Loone's 1986 Hino RG300, Crawn Motors' 1976 Domino/UD and of course Kenny's Denning collection. Whew, so many Jimmys in one place (Jimmy Jimmy)yoda Unfortunately, the weather gods did NOT smile down on us @ Sims , which was unfortunate as we were slightly late, and later still after our departure. BUT, Ken is one of those that doesn't throw anything out, so I'm sure our next visit, we'll have plenty to still see (and ride). For those hanging out for "newbies", the tour dished up a 2014 Rappan, 2014 MAN/Coach Design, & a 2004 B12B (so well kept, it looks brand new).
Overall, the weather was great, only short burst of drizzle/rain, but the weekend itself was truly superb. To the "MAINLAND CONTINGENT" whom constantly make the trip to Tasmania for the tours, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for supporting us. I get a great deal of satisfaction putting on these tours, and moreso when I hear the positive (and negative) comments. The numbers THIS year were the best we've had (36 total (22) mainland) and considering the vehicle changes, I thank you for your patience. It's probably a strange way to do things, BUT in order to show the variety of vehicles (in the least amount of time) this is the way to go. To the "locals", thank you too, some changing their work commitments to attend. I know you lot had fun, and to Grant Wise, who AGAIN has given ME great praise on ABC Radio, but promoted the Society's cause. Through Grant and Chris Wisbey from ABC Radio, the Society has received HUGE exposure, and the station is a great supporter of what we're trying to achieve. So thank you to all involved.
So that's about it, until 2016, (down south) we'll catch you all then. Stay SAFE.

TASMANIAN BUS & COACH SOCIETY NEWS UPDATE
Well, most of previous month has been tied up with the annual tour, so nothing of note has occurred. Unfortunately, undercover premises have not been found (although we are still searching) This has meant a halt on restoration, but behind the scenes, the executive committee has been busy formulating grant applications, organising prizes for our raffle, doing the odd charter and putting together an itinerary for the upcoming month(s). There is a meeting of the Execs NEXT week, so details of what's been arranged, will be posted to members to advise what's happening. So until then, keep those wheels rolling and IF ANYBODY hears of undercover parking/storage, please pass onto Execs to follow up.

I had a very bare looking #142 pick me up rather late and behind schedule on the Doorstopper route in West Moonah earlier this week, no ticketing machine so I 'had' to take a seat.
Must've been desperate for a temporary replacement if this was sent, I didn't think this and #143 were used for anything other than training now.

SUPPOSED to ONLY be used on overload school runs (or general school runs) NOT service work, because as you mention, NO ticket machine, NO destinations. Poor management/allocation of buses late in the afternoon They'd do better dry-hiring #134. At least that HAS a ticket machine (albeit old) AND destination signs and still in Metro livery.

Latest communications re: NEW CB80 (#344) Should be on the Spirit TUESDAY night, for arrival in Hobart approx. 10:30-11:00 WEDNESDAY morning.

For those looking at large bus movements, Metro & O'Driscoll Coaches are operating the "Boundary Rider" services to the AFL football TODAY (Sun 7th) @ Blundstone Arena. NORMALLY this involves about (5-6) O'Driscoll Coaches AND approx.(15) Metro buses (generally artics)
Likewise, next THURSDAY @ Pontville Oval, the Inter-school cross country carnival is on, which will attract buses from ALL operators from across the south.

TASMANIAN BUS & COACH SOCIETY NEWS: June 28th (Seabourne Coaches mini-tour POSTPONED > July 26th) June 28th event NOW, test-drive O'Driscoll Coaches' #21, NEW Mercedes Benz O500LE/IRIZAR. Pick-up time 11:30am from Metro Springfield (Stop A) returning approx. 2pm (NOT normal 3pm)

For those in the north of the state, Lee's Coaches & Manions have recently purchased NEW Rappan buses, whilst on the NW Coast, Crawns have 2 x 2nd hand units from the NT 1 x O405/Volgren + 1 x OH1418/AP Starliner (ex Buslink) whilst Merseylink have a NEW Mercedes Benz O500LE/Gemilang (#97)** identical to #96 & #98. Kergers @ Penguin have also acquired a NEW Rappan. **Rappans were delivered earlier 2015, likewise Crawn Motors' units

Slightly educated guess of 14 artics (2-3 euro boxes won't be used 729, 726 and whatever is at Bridgewater.... unless Sprucey changes his mind

Come along and check out O'Driscoll Coaches brand new O500LE / IRIZAR as we take the bus for a "test-drive" around the City, stopping at various locations for photos. P/UP will be: Metro Springfield @ 11:30am returning approx. 2:00pm. TBCS members FREE (others $5)
The TBCS newsletter is close to press, so keep your eye on the letterbox. This will include form for membership renewal.
JULY TBCS event (Sunday 26th) will be SEABOURNE COACHES mini-tour, visiting/riding Seabourne's vehicles from Sorell. P/UP 11:30am RTN approx. 3:00pm. More details closer to the date.
Additional bus news: O'Driscoll Coaches have purchased a HINO RB8/Chiron midibus (#37 ?). This vehicle is possibly replacing the LO812 currently being used.

I have not managed a trip to Tasmania for a couple of years.

I used to keep an eye out for the changes to livery.
According to my last notes, there were still 20 buses with the old two tone green livery. Have any been painted all white?

My lists noted:
Hobart [11] - 148, 149, 150, 164, 169, 173, 183, 184, 509, 515, 519.
Launceston [8] - 155, 157, 158, 159, 161, 172, 196, 601 [one side white].
At one time noted as Stored [1] - 147.

Only one I can see that HAS been painted white is #184 BusPlaneTrainTram. #147 still in service. Unsure about Launceston units.

On NEW bus notes, I've been advised Calow Coaches (on East Coast) have a new (2nd hand) OH1418/Austral whilst a brand new BCI arrives today (WED 24th). Also spotted yesterday was a MB/Mills Tui with thin blue stripes along the side. NO rego plates, recognised the driver (but cannot remember from where)

you haven't noted odriscolls new midi bus or buses not sure how many they got... its rego starts with an E runs out of Brighton (i think) I see it every morning
