Route 980 Turn Up and Go bus trial to launch in Caringbah South

The new route 980 will trial a dedicated high frequency bus service for local residents and visitors to and from Lilli Pilli Point and Caringbah Station, along Port Hacking Road which is one of the suburb’s busiest corridors.

The 'Turn Up and Go' service will operate every 10 minutes on weekdays between 6am to 9am to Caringbah Station and then from 4pm to 8.30pm to Lilli Pilli Point.

Regular Opal bus fares apply as do all Opal travel rewards such as the $2 Opal transfer discount when changing between a train and a bus within 60 minutes. You can tap on and off using your Opal card, credit and debit cards and linked smart devices but remember to separate your cards and use the same payment method.

10 minutes is not "turn up and go" in my book.

But it just sounds like another twist on the on-demand trial.

Here we simply have an 11-seater bus operating a regular style bus route at 6 services/hr, fully integrated into the opal system as a regular bus.

This used to kind of exist, you know, when the suburban free shuttle buses were running.

Also, if this is a frequency managed service as is the metro, B1, 333, 379, then there is still a "published timetable" but the TT would only state "Approx every 10 min".

With 22 stops and only 11 seats, you'd hope there'd only be one passenger every 2 stops on average!

Its basically just going back to the sort of frequency Caringbah Bus Service used to operate through the 60s to early 80s.

The Parramatta free shuttle is still running for now it might get phased out when the Parramatta light rail opens

Arguably the trams should have free CBD sections (funded by the Parking Space Levy which is what that levy should really be for), but I think the lure of money is too great for any government. It's also not necessary to attract people out of driving into the Sydney CBD anyway, but the need continues to apply in Parramatta.

I wish they'd use the term "high frequency" rather than the rather generally dishonest "Turn up and go" which only applies if you can see the next bus/tram/train approaching when you get to the stop.

Now these vehicles are being used with a route number, it forms part of our regular public transport system.

These vehicles don’t meet the requirements for the disability standards for accessible public transport act 2002, I wonder how long until there is until a discrimination case is brought forward?

I'm not sure I see why this route was chosen. There are busier short corridors to trial a 'high-frequency' service on in the area which I'd argue would be better suited, such as Miranda-Southgate, or Sutherland-Gymea TAFE.

It was one of ones used in the Eastern suburbs but I am sure I have seen it used in the Shire since then which is not recorded in the fleet list.
