Powderworks Road

Post by Fleet Lists »

I always thought it was called Powderworks Road ever since I lived there in 1950.
Bu this photo shows it otherwise Even this Governmnt document can not make up its mind as it generally refers to it as Powderworks Road but on at least one occasion Powder Works Road. https://www.northernbeaches.nsw.gov.au/ ... ssment.pdf

Technically, that document is a traffic assessment report written by AECOM for NSW Planning, so any misspellings/spelling variations in the report are by AECOM and not by the government. The government (or the planning department) is only in charge of reading and approving it, and not the one writing it.

Well to confuse things more, Google Maps says 'Powderworks' while Apple Maps says 'Powder Works'.

Also the NSW SIX Maps says 'Powderworks', so I'd say the sign is wrong.

Based on the sign Transport Info uses Powder Works Road in their timetables.

But Pittwater Council refers to Powderworks Road in their website.

If precedence is relevant, my 1938 Gregory's calls it Powder Works, but I reckon Pedant Way is a dead end....

Here's a slightly older 1934 Gregory's: https://www.voommaps.com/maps/gregorys_1934/81-82.html
It also says Powder Works Road
(Link to the full 1934 street directory: https://voommaps.com/historical-maps/19 ... directory/)

Transport for NSW has raised it with the Geographical Naming Board (or whatever the body with responsibility for names in this state). Apparently they are at a loss too. They are going to look into it.

There was previously similar confusion with Five Dock and Fivedock, IIRC.

And all those possessive suburbs that have lost their apostrophes.

I always wondered why it had that name and where it takes you.

Transport for NSW are in the process of updating the timetables to Powderworks after it was resolved by the Geographical Naming Board.

there is no obvious reason why it would be one word.

but steelworks is one word.

It is called that because of a very old plan to build a gunpowder factory there. I drive up it very often but for some reason very rarely down.

It does seem an oddly specific name and even more so when it's namesake never existed.
I guess it's better than a forgettable name such as Baker St or a similarly generic sounding name.

Would Lurena and Leumeah be similar sounding if somebody mishears the pronunciation of the suburbs name

Since Lurena is in India I would not be too worried about it.

LURNEA and Leumeah might be. That is a lot closer than India.

I am not even sure exactly where Lurnea is. It's near Casula, I think.
