I didn't see the depot name sadly but there's normally a Friday delivery run lately so I'll see what I can view from the 775/6 route tomorrow.

I have been noticing that the ex-N&W buses have been operating school buses around Lane Cove North in the mornings. Today, STA 3532 was operating on the 696, which is one of the 4 daily school bus services going along Stokes Street and Nundah Street.

I have used my photo of STA 3532 for my new avatar in this forum, though I feel like I remember a member of this forum also used a Custom Coaches 516 body as an avatar before as well...
Speaking of these EX-n&w O 405s i scored one on a railway square bound 501 a couple of weeks ago. I also managed to get a recording of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgeX34px6Ck&t=64s

That was at Pest Ryde. I read Ken had placed an order for many more than he got. How long were they actually operated as North & Western Bus Lines buses before the great takeover of 1999?
I can recall catching them a couple of times on the 545 from Chatswood. They seemed like a big upgrade in atype of bus he was choosing as a new order after the Hino RGs of before.

According to the SMH, the rollout of contactless was completed today, but I can find no such info from any TfNSW source.

Personally, I found the fact that the 33 is Australia's business bus route quite interesting. It shows what a little marketing and good frequencies can do. "The system upgrade coincides with the first birthday of the Bondi Link, which in its first 12 months has carried more than 8.7 million passengers – an average of 22,000 a day – making it Australia's busiest bus route."

Interesting about the 333 I always thought the 66 in Brisbane seemed busier than the 333

It is on the Transport for NSW website and is more relevant to the Opal thread where it is reported than here which is STA only.

It wants posted on Transport Info or Transport for NSW sites until sometime after I posted on here originally. Surely information on changes should be on their own websites before the SMH?

I'd suggest there is no bus route in the country with the overall frequency of the 333, when you consider:
- it has a daytime frequency of 6 minutes or better, 7 days a week, with frequencies reaching every 3 minutes in weekday peaks
- it has an early morning and evening headway of 10 minutes or better (and the 333N is not worse than a 30 minute headway overnight)
- it operates 24/7 (with the all stops 333N variant overnight)

From a patronage point of view:
- it has extremely high peak and off peak patronage, including weekends
- summer leisure patronage is extremely high
- it has a high turnover of passengers, so one trip can easily carry two separate full loads in different segments of the route
- with artics allocated exclusively to all trips (except for some overnight 333N's), coupled with the frequency, it has high capacity.

8.7 million p.a. is just touching tram territory but still less than half of what the Bondi trams used to carry. Brisbane 66 has about the same patronage as the Gong Shuttle, about 3 million p.a. I suspect the next busiest single bus service in Australia may be the 950 in Perth, but I'm not up to date on the latest patronage. However, that may be contending against some of the cross-regional routes in Melbourne that carry somewhere around 6 million ppa.

Latest data reveals the 66 recording just over 3.4 million trips in the 18/19 F.Y, with that number predicted to grow this year too due to the extra services put on during high demand times, including later at night and during exam periods.

The Auditor General's report two years ago put the 950 into a bracket of 3-4mil passengers annually. Since then, service improvements have continued to focus on the service with the majority of daytime trips now operated by articulated buses. Not sure how consistently busy Brisbane's 66 is, but I would probably hypothesise the 950 is at least on par with it.

B-Line was publicly stated to have carried 5.9 million passengers in its first year - with ongoing growth its a fair bet this year its edging into second place in terms of patronage. It’s definitely Sydney’s second busiest route.

Aren't the next lot of Brisbane bendies for the 66? Interesting indeed I always forget the b line as I avoid the area normally.

I think it's a bit of a beat-up in the sense that it's an amalgam of a couple or more previous routes that together carried about 10 million p.a. iirc, with some of those other services still existing. So it has simply assumed the status of the busiest single route. If it's so busy with high passenger turnover, they should be using all-door loading and it would be more effective and efficient.

Bondi 333 bus service revealed as the busiest route in the state
A bus route just a year old has taken out the top spot as the state’s busiest service, carrying 8.7 million Sydney commuters in the last 12 months, averaging to a huge 22,000 people a day. SEE IF IT’S YOUR BUS HERE.
Anton Rose, Wentworth Courier

September 24, 2019 3:27pm

A bus service which has become the state’s busiest route will see extra services added to cope with demand this summer.

New data shows the 333 bus from North Bondi to Circular Quay carried 8.7 million passengers in the past year, with 836,000 in January alone, making it the busiest service in NSW.

At peak times, especially on hot summer days, large queues of travellers form at Bondi Beach and Bondi Junction.

“Due to the popularity of Bondi Link in its first year, additional services will be supplied across the weekends to cater for demand between October’s Sculpture by the Sea event through until the end of summer,” a spokesman for State Transit said.

Vaucluse MP Gabrielle Upton on one of the 333 bendy buses. Picture: Supplied.
Its biggest test, the spokesman said, came during Sculptures last year when there was a 500 per cent increase in passengers in comparison to the 2017 event.

Last summer, the service recorded 2,359,000 customer journeys.

When the 333 “bendy bus” arrived for its first trip, it was met with mixed responses as some locals lamenting the changes that saw the east’s only direct route to the CBD canned.

Waverley Councillor Paula Messelos led a group of outraged residents over the changes at the time, which also saw a number of other routes scrapped.

Celebrating the introduction tap and go card payments on buses this week, Vaucluse MP Gabrielle Upton said the State Government had “delivered” on a commitment to improving public transport in the eastern suburbs.

“The turn up and go bus model has proven to be a big hit. Our community wanted a better bus service and our government has delivered it through Bondi Link, which has made more than 124,000 trips in 12 months,” she said.

“The Bondi Link service has carried more customers than the state’s population in its first year of operation, an average of 22,000 a day.”

Yes,definately a beat up as the amalgam of bus routes carried roughly the same numbers.
STA (and TFNSW)still need to rationalise the service there more and just have the one route 333 operating on that corridor. As Tony says with all door loading/unloading to make things more eficient.
I will bet Gabrielle Upton does not use the bus services in her electorate.

As a comparator, what's the pax numbers on the combined routes on the central CBD-Moore Park section before it branches?

I would say the 255 and 265 on the sleepy north shore are some if the least busy on Earth, carrying fresh air and polluting the air outside for nothing. That's "clout" for you, real or perceived.

265 is a weird service. Peak hour supplement?.
The 255 like plenty of service in that area doesn't run on Sundays at all, and has poor frequency.
