Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
Well, Melbourne managed to change its eponymous Spencer St for a meaningless Southern Cross.
Central isn't really central anymore. Maybe call it Haymarket?

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
The thing is, Sydney doesn't really have a pattern to it's inner-city stations.boronia wrote:Well, Melbourne managed to change its eponymous Spencer St for a meaningless Southern Cross.

Wynyard - landmark (?)
Town Hall - landmark
Central - "well it connects to everything so I guess it's centralised"
Museum - landmark
St James - I don't know
Circular Quay - landmark
Martin Place - street name
Pitt St - street name
Barangaroo - technically a landmark, but could even considered a town name
Redfern - town name
Mcdonaldtown - I don't know
Newtown - town name
Erskineville - town name
St Peters - town name
And so on.
The rest of NSW's stations are all pretty much just town names, but with Metro they're getting a little funky with names like Tallawong for example.
So, the thing is, what would you rename Central to? Surrounding streets? Pitt St is taken by the station further north. Eddy Avenue could work but doesn't roll of the tongue in my opinion. Chalmers Street could work, as would Devonshire Street.
"Next stop: Devonshire Street. Change here for T2 Inner West and Leppington, T3 Liverpool, T4 Illawarra, T8 Airport and South, NSW Intercity and regional services, and light rail services. Please mind the gap when boarding or alighting the train." - now rehearse that announcement, see how that sounds! (Not to mention that is always a mouthful)

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
St James is named after the nearby church.
Museum is actually a fair way from its museum, but is the closest station.
There is no actual suburb of McDonaldtown. I did see an explanation along time ago.
Pitt St is rather vague considering its length. Park St might have been better.
Martin Place metro might have been better Hunter St to avoid confusion.

Let's hope they don't have some really long name. They could just sell the naming rights Melbourne did with Watergardens . My silly suggestion is Central Railway Square or Chalmers St Railway Square.
I think calling metro station at Martin Place actually makes sense as it does reduce confusion otherwise you would have the case like in London with Bank and Monument stations.

It’ll probably be called Sydney Interchange or something silly like that... She like the word Interchange...

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
Central is the major and only terminus for all Intercity, Regional and Interstate services as well as the one place where all suburban lines interchange. Why try and reinvent the wheel? Just leave it as it is!
Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
This is probably going to turn out like the Sydney version of Southern Cross Spencer St already from the looks of it.
Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
Can someone actually post a link to this story? I can't find mention anywhere of this name change proposal.

It was a TV news clip. I haven't seen it in print.

That looks like what I saw. Gladys does use the term "Grand Central". (Not to be confused with her "Grand Concourse"?)

There was a council area that encompassed Erskenville that was MacDonaldtown. All that is left now is the station.boronia wrote:There is no actual suburb of McDonaldtown. I did see an explanation along time ago.

Pitt Street I would guess is named for the Mall.boronia wrote:Pitt St is rather vague considering its length. Park St might have been better.

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
But the station entrances will be in/near Park and Bathurst Sts. Not really relevant to the mall.Nugget wrote:Pitt Street I would guess is named for the Mall.boronia wrote:Pitt St is rather vague considering its length. Park St might have been better.

I always had the thought that Pitt Street might get renamed at some point closer to opening.

I agree that Park St would have been a more identifiable location than Pitt St, particularly for visitors unfamiliar with the city.

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
If the metro station in Hunter St is going to be called (and connected to) Martin Place, perhaps the station around Pitt St should be connected to, and called, Town Hall? There would be similar separations at both locations.

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
Depends how it is connected. Could be called Hunter St and provide ungated connection to both Wynyard and Martin Place.
On the Pitt St station
Park St doesn't describe it either as it's only the Northern entrance..
Maybe Town Centre (linked to Town Hall - and it's arguably the geographical heart of the CBD) or Pitt Mall (like Pall Mall on London)

As far as I'm aware, Martin Place metro staion is integrated with the paid area of existing train station while Pitt Street metro station is not integrated with Town Hall.

Except it isn’t. Hunter Line, Cumberland Line, Carlingford Line, and arguably Olympic Park Line don’t go to Central

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
You know what I meant. It's drawing a long bow to call the Hunter Line a Sydney suburban line and the others are essentially branch lines feeding into the main suburban trunk routes, which all pass through Central.gilberations wrote:Transtopic wrote:Central is the major and only terminus for all Intercity, Regional and Interstate services as well as the one place where all suburban lines interchange. Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
Saw some T3 runs getting diverted to North Sydney earlier, at North Sydney it showed up on the indicators as T1 Liverpool service!
Also spotted a B set heading to Hornsby on the north shore. Perhaps diverted due to disruptions? Can’t see any runs on the North Shore actually scheduled as a B set.
