New coach services between Sydney and Goulburn

New regional coach services from Goulburn to Canberra and Sydney
Friday 24 August 2018

From Monday 10 September NSW TrainLink will trial new weekday return coach services between Goulburn and Canberra and Goulburn and Sydney.

The aim of the new services is to provide more choice of public transport for the Goulburn region to make it easier for people to travel for business or to attend medical appointments, do shopping or visit family and friends.

The coach will depart from Goulburn Station at 09:00 as well as the Big Merino, arriving in Canberra CBD (Civic) by 10:15, before continuing onto John James and Canberra Hospitals and the Queanbeyan Bus Interchange. The coach will return back to Goulburn by 4pm.

For people wanting to spend extra time in Canberra, an existing coach and train service serves the Canberra CBD and hospitals, arriving in Goulburn just before 7pm.

In addition to the new trial coach service to Canberra, NSW TrainLink is also trialling a coach and train connection to improve journey times between Goulburn and Campbelltown. You can then connect with train services to Sydney, potentially saving up to 30 minutes of your journey.

These trial coach services provide services at new times to complement existing trains:

Goulburn station to Campbelltown station departing at 05:00 and 16:10 to transfer to a train and arrive at Central station at 07:46 and 18:45.
Campbelltown station to Goulburn station, departing Campbelltown at 07:20 and 18:20, arriving at Goulburn by 09:00 and 20:00.

This will allow you to travel from Goulburn to Central and return on a combination of coach and train in around two hours and 45 minutes, a similar time to the existing XPT Regional train services.

You will not be able to book seats on the coach between Campbelltown and Goulburn, instead you can just use your Opal card, or purchase an Opal single ticket from a Ticket Machine at stations, to travel on these services. Just remember to tap on at the start then and off at each end of your journey.

The services between Goulburn to Canberra are timed to allow travel to Canberra’s CBD, hospitals and Queanbeyan, with a return service in the afternoon. Bookings are essential for these services.

These services are in addition to existing NSW TrainLink train and coach services in these areas, providing more travel options for residents and visitors.

Wasn't a local private operator proposing a Goulburn - Canberra service a few months ago?

It seems quite curious that in the evenings, there will be three services departing from Campbelltown to Goulburn in the space of 24 minutes, consisting of...

6:20pm Road coach express to Goulburn
6:32pm Canberra Xplorer
6:44pm Local Endeavour all stops to Goulburn

One might wonder if there is a desire to cut back the small number of local trains that terminate at Goulburn with this move. It seems hard to justify running a train basically just for the tiny amount of patronage generated by Exeter, Wingello, Tallong, Penrose and Marulan, when they could just add request stops to the Xplorer.

Marulan Coaches were operating a commuter service from Marulan - Goulburn - Canberra, but it has now ceased after today's run due to low patronage.

The fare difference between the XPL and the Opal-enabled Endeavour services is significant. Adding request stops to the XPL isn't a sufficient replacement unless they allow Opal fares somehow.

It would be much more likely IMO that they use this bus to divert some through Goulburn passengers, thus further depressing the numbers on the Endeavour service. This will justify cutting the Endeavour altogether for those small stops. A local bus could be introduced from Moss Vale to Goulburn.

This is a ploy to further reduce the deplorable railway service available and to justify its shut it down.

Why don’t they just extend all Campbelltown Moss Vale Southern Highlands line services down to Goulburn unless there’s something going on between Transport For NSW and the ARTC down there

Why don't they just accept Opal on NSW TrainLink XPT and Xplorer services? Like V/Line accepts Myki on their equivalent services.

The reason why V/Line are Myki able is because the bureaucrats at PTV understand that the v in PTV stands for Victoria and Transport For NSW think that stations outside the NSW TrainLink Intercity network witch are the stations where the XPT’s and Xplorers service don’t deserve to be opal active

Unless you change the fare logic (which doesn't seem easy given the continuing issues at the airport stations) it would just open it up to more abuse.

Probably not so much of a problem on the Main South, but if Opal were allowed on the Main North and Main Western XPT and Xplorer services, they would quickly become overrun with Gosford, Wyong Broadmeadow, Katoomba and Lithgow passengers. So they really need to remain reserved seating only.

I've had a look at the timetables from 30th Sep 2018 (available at Transport NSW) & the Southern Highlands timetable DOES include some trains that have been cut completely between Moss Vale & Goulburn.

Edit: And that's not the only interurban line that has cuts to train services.

There doesn't seem to be a problem with Geelong passengers taking the Warrnambool train.

V/Line has an all DMU / diesel locomotive hauled fleet, so can shuffle its fleet to meet demand. The XPT and Xplorer fleets are fully occupied, save for about a dozen XPT trailers that could be used to strengthen sets.

The fact that trains are diesel or electric doesn't change anything. It's the service type, not the service power source.

Power source is relevant to a point, in as much as V sets are restricted to where they can operate, a restriction V/Line doesn't have. But you are correct, XPTs and Xplorers carrying passengers that would otherwise be carried by EMUs is not a physical problem.

V/Line does have some restrictions such as standard gauge vs broad gauge rolling stock. Also the Velocity DMUs aren't necessarily cleared for all routes.

Why don’t they introduce a Kiama Bomaderry type rail service on the Southern Highlands line that runs between Moss Vale and Goulburn and it can meet up with the Campbelltown service at Moss Vale the way the timetable is down on that part of the Southern Highlands line currently is Melbourne bound XPT x2 ,Canberra bound Xplorer x3 ,Goulburn bound Endeavour x4 ,Goulburn bound SH100 rail bus x1 and Canberra bound TrainLink coach x1 and opposite direction Sydney bound XPT x2 ,Sydney bound Xplorer x3 ,Moss Vale-Campbelltown-Sydney bound Endeavour x3 ,Moss Vale bound SH100 rail bus x1 and Wollongong bound TrainLink coach x1so by having a Endeavour or 2 running all station shuttles between Moss Vale and Goulburn people don’t have to book a seat on a XPT Xplorer or the Wollongong Canberra TrainLink coach and they wouldn’t need to run the once a day SH100 rail bus any more

Perhaps its all because NSW regional services are compulsory booked seats and require payment when booking, so Opal isn't needed.

Seemingly there isn't the demand, the coach service was introduced in about 2005 to replace an Endeavour that allowed other services to be beefed up.

most people between moss vale and goulburn use the local bus for travels between moss vale and bundanoon, or the train/train replacement to and fromgoulburn.
very little patronage from penrose, wingello, tallong and marulan
