Sydney public tranaport in 1998

Post by Campbelltown busboy »

The Sydney public transport system in 1998 was not quite the way it is 20 years later
Trains
There were 297 stations on the Cityrail network
R sets/S sets and T sets were operating on every line in the Cityrail suburban network
K sets and C sets were only operating on what is now the T1 line
L sets were operating on the Olympic Park line as 2 car sets
The South Coast line was only electrified to Dapto
V sets were operating on all electrified intercity lines
G sets were operating on the Central Coast and South Coast lines
Buses
There were a lot more private bus operators in Sydney in 1998 witch include operators such as
Bankstown Strathfield Bus Service
Baxters Bus Lines
Bustrans
Caringbah Bus Service
Crossleys Bus Lines
Crowthers Bus Link
Glenoire Bus Co
Harris Park Transport/AJ Moore
Hawkesbury Valley Buses
Kurnell Passengers & Transport Service
Liverpool Transport Co
North & Western Coaches
Parramatta Ryde Bus Service
Pioneer Coaches
Pleasure Tours
Shorelink
Southtrans
West Bankstown Bus Service
Westbus
Westway Bus & Coach
Not forgetting about about the STA and the 6 privates that are still in operation
Busabout
Busways
Forrest Coaches
Interline Bus Service
Mainbar Bundeena Bus Service
Punchbowl Bus Co
Ferries
Not much has changed in the last 20 years
Light Rail
Line only went to Lilyfleld

One big error:
Ferries were operated by Sydney Ferries as a subsidiary of State Transit or whatever its name was at the time. It became a standalone authority in 2004 and operated by Sydney Harbour Ferries since 2012 and after six years the sky has not fallen down

And compare 1977 with 1997
WHAT HAS CHANGED IN 20 YEARS.

Recently I came across an old list of Private Bus Services in the Sydney area which was published in the 4th edition of the UBD Compact Street Directory of Sydney. While the directory is not dated, it is thought to be of 1977/78 vintage as the takeover by Bass Hill Bus Co of route 20 which took place in 1977 is shown but McVicar which broke up in 1978 and Hunters Hill Bus Co which was taken over by North & Western in 1978, are still listed.

Below I have listed every operator shown in that list and provided comments on what has happened to the routes of these operators from then until the current date.

In some case specific details of route changes have been included but this has not been possible in every case, especially where the routes of a small operator have been integrated into the network of a larger operator.

Artarmon Bus Service 52 Chatswood West - Artarmon
192 Artarmon - Crows Nest

• These routes together with the Lane Cove Bus Service routes (see under Deanes Coaches) were taken over by Macquarie Towns Coaches in 1985 retaining the trading name Lane Cove Bus Service. Macquarie Towns (Lane Cove) was taken over by Harbour City Coaches by September 1987 and on 14/8/89 became part of the North & Western route network. However routes 52 and 192 were not involved in that take over.
• From 12/7/90 the STA operated a route 260 as a peak hour service generally covering route 52 but this appears to have ceased by the end of 1993.

Auburn Bus Services 1 Auburn Stn - Skarrat St
15 Auburn Stn - Skarrat St
16 Auburn Stn - Ermington
62 Auburn Stn - Ermington
168 Parramatta - Auburn

• Over the years routes 1, 15, 16 and 62 were amalgamated into the one route Auburn Stn - Ermington
• 1/8/90 Auburn Bus Service formed an association with Nowra Coaches and changed its name to Auburn Coaches.
• This arrangement ceased mid September 1990 when routes 73 and 84 acquired from Chester Hill were sold to Crossley Bus Lines on 21/9/90. All other routes including route 59 (see under Drummond) went to E Street Bus Lines. On 2/10/90 these routes returned to Auburn Bus Service before selling them later that month to Auburn Coaches (the principals being J. King of Nowra Coaches and J. Cerezo). The Nowra involvement ceased 1/2/91.
• Route 59 was incorporated into route 168 and became known as route 405 on 20/2/91.
• When Auburn Coaches ceased operation on 6/3/93, route 405 went to Holroyd Bus Lines, while the Auburn - Ermington route went to Parramatta Ryde Bus Service.

Bankstown - Lakemba 26 Bankstown Stn - Lakemba Stn
Bus Service 176 Punchbowl Stn - Bankstown Stn

• Very little remains of these routes which became part of the Highway Tours route network 16/12/85. Route 176 immediately became part of a diversion of an ex McVicar route. Route 26 went to Challenge Travel in February 1986, to Revesby Bus and Coach Service 29/1/90 and in January 1992 was amalgamated with the Punchbowl Bus Company route to Mortdale now known as route 945.

Barklimore Bros 153 Merrylands Stn - Merrylands
214 Merrylands Stn - Wentworthville Stn

• Was taken over by Baxter’s Holroyd Bus Lines in the late 1970’s.

Bass Hill Bus Co 20 Bankstown Stn - Eldridge Rd
21 Bankstown Stn - Villawood Stn

• Became part of Baxter’s Holroyd route network on 1/7/1995.

Belmore - Lakemba Bus 35 Belmore Stn - Lakemba Stn
Service 92 Bardwell Park - Roselands

• During 1978 became part of Cumberland Coaches with whom the routes passed on to Highway Tours (Canterbury Bus Lines). These two routes were then sold to Pleasure Tours about September 1986 with ex Blythe route 229 amalgamated with route 92. The amalgamation of these routes was rather logical as route 229 travelled along route 92 roads most of the way, but was not allowed to pick up or set down along these roads.

Berowra Coach Service 31 Hornsby Stn - Berowra
103 Hornsby - Hornsby Heights

• Same ownership as Hornsby District Bus Co - see under that operator.

E. H. Blythe 6 Arncliffe Stn - Earlwood
68 Hurstville Stn - Earlwood
229 Kogarah Hospital - Roselands

• By early 1979 route 6 was operated by Sharpe’ Bus Service - see under Carlton Bus and Coach Service.
• Routes 68 and 229 became part of the Highway Tours route network as Bexley Passenger Transport. See under Belmore - Lakemba Bus Service for further details of route 229. On 14/10/87 route 68 was sold to Sydney Coach Lines - see under Carlton Bus and Coach Service.

Bosnjak Bus Service 32 Kogarah - Dolls Point
45 Canley Vale Stn - Cabramatta
56 Chatswood - Warringah Mall
78 Fairfield Stn - Bossley Park
80 Fairfield Stn - Horsley Park

• There were a couple of errors in this entry as routes 32 and 56 were not operated by Bosnjak at any time.
• Route 32 was being operated by Foley’s Bus Lines which was omitted from the list, right up to December 1994 when it was taken over by Saints and amalgamated with the only route operated by them at that time. This combined route is now known as route 947.
• Route 56 was the only route operated at the time by Forest Coach Lines which was also omitted from the list, and is still operated by them, together with a number of other service acquired by them since then.
• Of the other routes, route 45 was the original route operated in 1955 by the Bosnjak organisation, while the other two routes were acquired by Bosnjak in 1976. By 1985 the name Westbus had been adopted for all operations owned by Bosnjak.

Bowmans Bus Service 2 St Marys Station - Dunheved

• Became part of the Westbus route network in 1983.

Briens Bus Service 119 Newtown - White Bay

• Refer previous article on Private Bus Services to Marrickville Metro.

Bundeena Bus Service 64 Bundeena Wharf - Bonnie Vale

• Now operated by Maianbar & Bundeena Bus Service.

Calabro Bros 40 Cabramatta Stn - Badgerys Creek
76 Fairfield Stn - Fairfield West
77 Fairfield Stn - Cabramatta Stn

Became part of the Westbus route network in 1989.

Campbelltown Transit Co 93 Campbelltown - Appin

• Had been owned by the Rowe since 1970 and the overall operation name Busways was adopted in 1991

Caringbah Bus Service 50 Caringbah - Beauty Point

• Still operated by the same company but route split into two with both extended to Miranda at the Caringbah end from 28/1/92 (see under Hurstville Bus Lines) and at the other end one operating to Lilli Pilli and the other to Port Hacking. I can find no reference to a Beauty Point in the Sutherland area - the only Beauty Point I can find in Sydney is in Mosman - a long way from Caringbah. However an old 1970’s street directory did locate a Beauty Point near Lilli Pilli.

Carlton Bus & Coach Service 49 Carlton Stn - Rockdale Stn

• By early 1979 this route was operated by Sharpe’ Bus Service which had also acquired route 6 from Blythe by this time. During 5/79 both routes were transferred to Murray, then to Brighton Bus Lines 10/82 and Jenteeno 2/12/83. On 10.9.84 route 6 went to the Highway Tours group and during 4/85 to Sydney Coach Lines. On 27/3/85 route 49 went direct from Jenteeno to Sydney Coach Lines.
• Sydney Coach Lines also acquired route 68 from Highway Tours 14/10/87 - see under Blythe.
• All three routes then operated under the same timetable for nearly ten years until 12/10/96 when they went to the STA but route 49 was immediately transferred to Pioneer Coaches.

Chalmers Coach Service 28 Killara Stn - East Killara
183 Lindfield Stn - Roseville Stn

• Late 88 these routes went to East Killara - Lindfield Bus Service trading as Kristin Coaches and renamed East-West Bus Company 5/2/90. They passed on to Mr A. Burrows trading as Midshore Busways in early 1992 together with some ex Deane routes, and on 8/7/95 to Ku-ring-gai Bus Co (not the same company as the one listed in this article). They became part of the Shorelink route network by 20/12/96.

Chester Hill - Bankstown 73 South Granville - Bankstown Stn
Bus Service 84 Guildford - Chester Hill Stn

• The Bankstown Stn - Potts Hill section of route 73 was obtained by Drummond (see under McVicar) 2/2/81 and amalgamated with its route 123 to allow it to operate Bankstown - Lidcombe via Regents Park.
• The remainder of route 73 and route 84 were transferred to Auburn Bus Service 3/2/86. With the demise of this operator the routes were transferred to Crossley Bus Lines.

• Since 2/84 operated by Hawkesbury Valley Coaches as Windsor - Pitt Town.

152 Gladesville - Meadowbank

• These routes were transferred 31/8/81 to Metro West Bus Service which was closely associated with North & Western Bus Lines in. On 30/6/92 the name North & Western was adopted for the full operation.

Cumberland Coaches 34 Strathfield Stn - Hurstville Stn
39 Campsie Stn - Hurstville Stn
111 Kingsgrove Stn - Hurstville Stn
194 Kingsgrove Stn - Hurstville Stn

• Routes 34 and 39 - as well as Belmore - Lakemba routes 35 and 92 which were acquired during 1978 - see under that operator for more details - became part of the Highway Tours Group under the name Canterbury Bus Lines 31/8/83. Crossley and J. Hill) trading as Canterbury Bus Lines - Hill was bought out shortly afterwards. Route 39 also went to Canterbury Bus Lines 3/88.

• First operation acquired by Deane in the Sydney southern suburbs 17/8/88 initially as Deane’s Menai Bus Service and renamed Southtrans when Hadfield was acquired 10/7/89.

The above lists 91 operators. This would increase to 93 with the inclusion of Foleys and Forest Coach Lines which were omitted. But then it can be decreased to 83 if 10 operators with common ownership as other operators are excluded. Hence as far as I concerned there were 83 operators at the time the operators list was produced.

The 1993 New South Wales Bus Operators and Fleet Listings include 41 operators which operated route services in the Metropolitan area. This would decrease to 40 if West Bankstown Bus Service and Bankstown - Strathfield Bus Services which are under common ownership are counted as one. A decrease of 43 since 1977 or just over 50%.

And since 1993 a further 11 operators have disappeared (or no longer operate route services):-
Bass Hill Bus Service,
Canterbury Bus Lines,
Carrs Park Charter Tours and Buslines,
Foley’s Bus Service,
Kogarah - Carrs Park Bus Service,
Manly Bus Service,
Midshore Busway (including its successor Ku-Ring-gai Bus Co),
Revesby Bus and Coach Service,
Richmond Coaches,
St Ives Bus Service,
Sydney Coachlines.

This leaves us with the following 29 operators:-
Busabout (formerly Neville’s Bus Service),
Buslink - including Crowther and Kurnell Passenger and Transport Services (Nicholsons),
Bustrans (formerly Katen & Heath),
Busways,
Caringbah Bus Service,
Crossley Bus Lines,
Forest Coach Lines,
Glenorie Bus Company,
Harris Park Transport,
Hawkesbury Valley Coaches,
Holroyd Bus Lines,
Hopkinsons Coaches,
Liverpool Transport Co,
Maianbar and Bundeena Bus Service,
Marrickville Bus Lines,
Metro Link ( including Interline Bus and Coach Service which has common ownership),
Moore’s Tours,
North & Western Bus Lines,
Oatley Bus Service/Premier Coaches,
Parramatta Ryde Bus Service,
Peakhurst Coaches,
Pioneer Bus Service,
Pleasure Tours,
Punchbowl Bus Co,
Shorelink,
Southtrans,
West Bankstown Bus Service/Bankstown Strathfield Bus Service,
Westbus,
Westway Bus and Coach Service.

Arguably the number could be decreased by two if Busabout, Liverpool Transport and Hawkesbury Valley which are all owned by Calabro’s are counted as one or increased by one if the two Buslink operators are counted separately.

But if we settle on 29, we are down to about 35% of the number of operators in the Metropolitan area back in 1977.

And this number may be reduced by another 1 if Saints route 947 is sold to another existing operator as possibly suggested above.

The Times, a monthly publication of AATTC, has recently also contained some letters on the number of Private Operators in the Sydney Metropolitan Area. The consensus of that association is that there are 35 such operators. The extra six are made up as follows:
• Buslink considered as two separate operators
• Interline Bus and Coach Service considered separate from Metrolink
• Pearce Omnibus Pty Ltd
• Katoomba - Leura (Mountainlink)
• Blue Mountains Bus Co
• Picton Coaches
The reason for the inclusion of the last four is that they have been allocated route numbers within the Sydney Metropolitan route numbering system although Katoomba - Leura does not use these route numbers.

Off the top of my head, I think the light rail was only as far as Wentworth Park in 1998.

When Bill Sharpe took over this service, it traded as Caledonia Bus Lines. Murray's took over the licence in 5/79 to get access to NSW charter plates, but Sharpe continued to operate the service until late 1981 when Murrays took it over completely.

K sets and C sets were only operating on what is now the T1 line
L sets were operating on the Olympic Park line as 2 car sets
C sets operated on effectively the T2/T3/T8 lines ("Sector 2"). With a daily excursion of one 6 car C set into Sector 3, known as "run 54". It does an Epping to City Circle trip :) Run 54 used to also do a run in the afternoon in Sector 1 (T4 line), making it the only run to go into almost every part of Sydney!

L sets operated on Olympic Park as 2 car sets but also between Thirroul and Port Kembla as 3 car sets.
