XPT all the way. Casino XPT to Central, Dubbo XPT to Orange. (19 minute connection time, but they often hold the Dubbo service if Casino is running late)

Or you can use CCN to Sydney, BMT to Lithgow, and some connecting bus services. Check out on TripFinder

Or is this another question about driving there?

He'd use a GPS if he was driving. They are very affordable these days. Still, he could have been clearer what he meant.

Well, I just looked at a map of the state in a 2003 UBD street directory and it doesn't show any main connecting roads leading direct from Newie to Orange, without going out of the way toward Maitland first and then you have to turn a few corners along the way to get to your destination. I don't imagine they have spent a terrible lot upgrading roads out that way either, so I think your best option would be to use the M1 to Sydney and then M2/M7 toward the blue mountains. It may be a slightly longer distance, but the quality of the roads and average speeds will be much greater and much safer than going by the wild west. You can always enter your destination on Google Maps navigator and/or a purpose made GPS and read the turn by turn directions list to see that they say. My old TomTom used to have an option to avoid toll roads and it would adjust he route accordingly and likely show you the wild west way from Newie instead of going through the northern part of Sydney.
I, personally would just go via as many dual carriageways as possible, and that means Sydney!

If it's Mon, Wed or Fri, Sid Fogg's coaches from Newcastle Station (Bay 5) to Dubbo, then Central West XPT to Orange.

WHAT? $453 just for a round trip Newcastle to Orange for a 50 minute flight each way?: https://www.google.com.au/flights/#sear ... -01-22;s=0

Edit: Now he tells me he means driving.

CCCC, M1 (former F3) then Great Western Hwy. Do a search for "Newcastle to Orange driving" without the double quotes.

But I'd take a train, OR maybe coach to Dubbo, then XPT to Orange.

yeah swift I did the google thing and it shows not much in the three options km and time wise, but I recall many years ago I left Orange via sydney for Newcastle with Coach and some parents that drove went via Sandy Hollow and the teachers had to hang around another hour
for parents to arrive back at school.

I thought it would be nice scenic drive up through Merriwa and Gulgong, keep away from Sydney. LOL

You might save fuel too by keeping on the move and cruising below 100km/h for much of the trip. It gives you a chance to explore places you might never otherwise see. Try not to use a GPS and plot your route from a detailed road map. It's good for the mind and makes it more adventurous and challenging. :)

Yeah Im not big on technology and not sure how well it would work anyway out some of those county area's.

Ive done Merriwa Cassillis to Mudgee/Gulgong plenty of times but never turned off at SandyHollow to Ryltson which the google map is suggesting.

Think I might to Bells line of road to Orange as I have to be there by certain time and take the other way on return.

Not concerned about fuel saving , Ive got VW Jetta diesel and will most likely average around the 4.0L/100km

Check that one carefully - my old map shows the northern 20 to 25km of Rylstone-Bylong as unsealed, as well as about 15 to 20km east of Bylong.

^Which harks back to my point that roads out west of Singleton and beyond are not likely to have had anywhere near the money lavished on them as much of the route via Sydney. Wow, not even a layer of asphalt -worse than I imagined.
