It's just emergency stairs to York Street.

The Daily Mail has some fantastic pictures of the construction of Wynyard in the 20's and 30's.

Yep - the door on the left near the indicator boards. Much more ornate than any fire stairs constructed today.mandonov wrote:These ones?

HERITAGE (S60) APPLICATION -
A current Heritage Application includes the replacement of the 4 timber-tread escalators and other stuff.
http://www.heritage.nsw.gov.au/applications
Hard copies at TfNSW, 388 George St & at Heritage Office, 10 Valentine Ave. Parramatta.
Submissions close 14 June 2016.
EDIT - That's the link provided by the Heritage Council. I agree there seems to be nothing there about Wynyard Station.

Re: Wynyard Station Upgrade
Final George St side of Opal gates now operating and old gates removed, meaning the lift to Coles/Wynyard Park is no longer in the paid area (apart from its special gates)
Still quite a bit of tiling and roofing to go but it is beginning to look like it's final shape.
Tiles have also been stripped from the southern most old staircase to 3/4 and scaffolding removed, and most of the support columns on 3/4 have now been painted white.

Ahh, I read this article.mandonov wrote:The Daily Mail has some fantastic pictures of the construction of Wynyard in the 20's and 30's.

I have to say, the points raised in the comments section is something I agree with - the heritage look and feel. Is it all going to go??
Thats exactly what I didn't like about Newtown's upgrade - all the old school charm was taken away and it was turned into another generic Glenfield / Leppington style station. Boring. Previously, it reminded me a lot of the old Shoreditch tube station. Having a charming old station building that was just turned into a Chicken shop. Even if you read Museum's upgrade leaflet, you'll see some people express concern over whether or not the heritage aspect of the station will be affected.
Anyways, I don't think its going to be finished in June 2016, that sounds too optimistic but hey who knew this would be late?
Re: Wynyard Station Upgrade
I think it will be done in time.
The concourse has been opened up considerably, and what looks to be the whole concourse is fully retiled.
The full George Street gate line is in operation too, with 4 or 5 old gates left at the southern end.
All that's left is cleaning up the ceiling, finishing work on the stairs, and removing the remaining hoardings.

Re: Wynyard Station Upgrade
The Wynyard upgrade isn't nearly as radical as the Newtown one. They aren't building any new concourses or stairwells, just refurbishing what's there. I do wish Newtown had kept the old stairwell in use though, as an "exit only" with full height turnstyles. There are a few places on the network where exit turn styles could be useful actually.

Re: Wynyard Station Upgrade
I do very much agree - certainly I'm not the only one who realises it takes longer to actually get down to the platform by having to walk all the way to the middle and then down the stairs? That exact walkway is also littered with hobo's and loud music players, isn't the most pleasant either. And yeah definitely, the old station building and stairs should have at least been kept in use somehow. One comment on the Daily Mail's article sums up how I feel about the new Newtown station - it's about as welcoming as a public toilet. The old one had the building with staff in the old ticket office, lovely. But Gladys saw it as broken and so 'fixed' it.
Anyways yeah, at least with Wynyard, I like what they did with the new Opal barriers, I'll give it that, and more shops/retail around, I'm definitely saying yes to that.

I wasn't aware that Gladys was Minister when the design was announced in 2009!Jurassic_Joke wrote: But Gladys saw it as broken and so 'fixed' it.
You seem to have forgotten that the work also included a new, and now very busy, side entry.

Commuters travelling through one of Sydney's busiest railway stations will face four years of disruption as the hub undergoes a major makeover.
The $1 billion Wynyard Place project will be carried out at the same time as parts of the city's main thoroughfare - George Street - are restricted to pedestrians, and the tramway is built.
The Wynyard Station upgrade will see a new commercial and retail precinct, including a 27-floor office tower, a grand transit hall and a public concourse being built.
The complex project won't be completed until 2020 but people will be able to access the station during its development, Transport Minister Andrew Constance said on Wednesday.
"We are in the midst of very significant construction disruption right across the city, it does require patience," he said.
Mr Constance said the government would keep commuters aware of the changes well in advance.
Developers Brookfield Property Partners will also restore the historic Shell House on nearby Carrington Street as part of the project, while Margaret Street and Wynyard Lane will also be refurbished.
The state government is already talking to the owners and tenants of businesses now housed at Wynyard Station, Premier Mike Baird said while announcing the project's latest development with Mr Constance.
The new hub would be similar to those at railway stations in other great cities around the world, Mr Baird said.
"They're welcoming, they're inviting, they provide an overall experience whether it be retail on their way home from work picking things up, you need an improved experience," Mr Baird said.
It's expected up to 10,000 commuters will pass through the CBD precinct an hour once the project is built.

Re: Wynyard Station Upgrade
Good news.. Be very interesting to see how they construct it whilst still retaining access to Wynyard.
Presumably it will need to be constructed in two halves,
Interesting is the lack of any 'T' branding on these latest renders.. was quite apparent on previous versions

Re: Wynyard Station Upgrade
The previous renders showed a (T) on a departures screen seen from the street. You can still see that screen in this latest render, but it's not being used for transit info.
Either way, I don't put much trust in renders for small details. I guess we'll find out in 4 years.

Re: Wynyard Station Upgrade
Haven't been through Wynyard much in the last week but noticed the first set of retiled stairs to 3/4 is now open.
Northern most set on 3/4 now closed for retiling
S60 application now noted on the webpage. Sadly actual info isn't online

York St exit in the final stages with the hanging light/CCTV tracks being installed and white panels on the walls near Concourse bar.
A number of pillars on the George St side have been resurfaced. Rather than removing the existing tiles they are simply adding some framing and installing a rounded white covering
(as is shown on the pillar in mandonov's May 23 pic)
Northern most stairs on 3/4 remain closed

Re: Wynyard Station Upgrade
I'm not very impressed with the new toilets at Wynyard.
First two visits, long queues, about 10 minutes for what used to be a 20 second operation.
Third visit, no queue. Try to open door, locked. Try to open second door, locked. Inspect third door and notice tiny red-green indicator in the door handle which is invisible unless you bend over to scrutinise it. The door was rattled by other another two times during the 25 seconds or so that I was in there, so perhaps I am not the only person who can't clearly see this.
Not very successful "upgrade".

Just another part of the policy of making train travel as unappealing as possible.
I was surprised they actually put troughs in with the Central N rebuild.

Re: Wynyard Station Upgrade
I think this is actually one of the best part of the upgrade, to be honest, I certainly tip my hat to whoever had this idea. The new toilets are very spacious, and private, I like that. I much prefer the idea of someone having a toilet to themselves, they're rare in Sydney. I'm a guy though, and I have noticed the queues for the female toilets , but not the male ones.Liamena wrote:I'm not very impressed with the new toilets at Wynyard.

I will say though, it does feel like, literally everywhere in Sydney, everyone has to go to the toilet at the same time, theres always queues everywhere for pretty much any toilet in the CBD, honestly it is pretty dumb, but theres no doubt these new toilets are an improvement over the original communal one which was downright disgusting, way too small, never clean, ew, good riddance.
On the other hand, I really like how this new station is coming along. Seriously. They have actually modernised a station, improved it, and its still has some character at the same time. **unlike Newtown, cough cough, its so forgettable now**
Re: Wynyard Station Upgrade
Northernmost stairs to 3/4 look almost complete and I suspect will open this week sometime. Still two to go after that.
Roof of the paid concourse looking a lot neater with most of the wiring bundled up ready to be placed into the track lighting.
Interesting when looking at the fire stairs on both sides is that as well as the old cream tiles, if you look far enough you can see white tiling with a blue ribbon line, which I guess must have been the original scheme.

2nd most northern now closed.
First piece of new perimeter glass (similar to Town Hall) now installed on the northern end of the concourse. You can also see a good 100m down Wynyard Walk from the northern stairs to 3/4.
Finally they have begun installing matching profile (but brand new) wooden rails on the new southern most stairs to 3/4.
Don't think Town Hall has a thread but the central spine of the paid concourse is now fully retiled and they are now working on the stair entrances

I was actually surprised that that they actually did a renovation with the toilets in central station, considering how they renovated the toilets a few years back as well.boronia wrote:I was surprised they actually put troughs in with the Central N rebuild.
I think for central, its would be more difficult putting individual "boxes" for toilets, unlike wynard where there aren't as much people. I'm wondering why many sydney trains stations toilets favor individual "boxes" over communal ones.

Actually no everyone I apologise. I retract my positive compliment over Wynyards new toilets. Standing outside them right now, and there's a queue or about 8 people....really? At 9:30pm? It isn't even a Thursday/Friday/Saturday for gods sake
Re: Wynyard Station Upgrade
There is always a shortage of toilets at some key times, like intermission at the Opera House when all the women have to go at once.GazzaOak wrote:I was actually surprised that that they actually did a renovation with the toilets in central station, considering how they renovated the toilets a few years back as well.boronia wrote:I was surprised they actually put troughs in with the Central N rebuild.

A railway station, with a fairly continuous flow of people, should not really have a demand bottleneck like that.
I understand that some people have concerns about doing their business in front of other people - well fair enough but you could always wait for a cubicle. And probably never travel overseas. And as for hygeine and aesthetics, I'd consider the cubicle to be worse than the regular male #1 facility.
Perhaps it is all about making life easier for deviants. Or maybe making it harder for them, I don't know.
Or perhaps it is some kind of perverse gender equality outcome - making males suffer in a timewasting queue just because female allegedly have to, sometimes.
Waiting 20 minutes and missing the train, to do a routine task before a 1 hour train ride , that used to take 10 seconds with no fuss, it's not a convenience, it is not an improvement, it's not progress, it's a fail.
