I wandered along to this session.

I asked one of Altrac staff if the "tram" in the yard was real or just a mock up?
"What tram? Nothing has arrived yet".
"So what is the 30 metre long object all wrapped up in plastic sitting on the tracks?"
(Embarrassed blush) "Oh that?; yes, it is a tram".

I noticed yesterday that it has been moved over onto another track "inside" the building.

They're probably waiting for the ministerial press conference to make it public. Can't pass up that media opportunity!

Probably waiting for some other crisis to come up, and use the "first tram unveiling" as a decoy.

The elephant in the room lol.

They should have ordered it in HO scale, it would have been easier to hide.

A line of 16 elephants more like.
EDIT: been meaning to ask this. I have noticed asphalt in the grooves of the rails. Do they have special equipment to remove it before the trams travel on them? It looks like it will be a bit of a job to remove.

I also asked this guy how trams would get from the depot to Kingsford and v/v.

I'm not sure if this has been clarified here previously, but it seems that a cross-over will be installed just north of "Kensington Junction", so trams will not have to go all the way to Moore Park to reverse (same with trams going to Randwick). Trams going into the depot will have to reverse a second time at Royal Randwick to access a connecting track. Despite an internal track in the depot terminating just a few metres short of Ascot St, he did not grasp the convenience of extending this line down to Anzac Pde.

The two connecting tracks from the depot have been in place across Allison Rd for a few weeks now.

"Bondi Junction" also covers a fairly wide area, as far west as the bus depot, and east to Bondi Rd. It probably has a bit more GNB legitimacy though.

Those "Junction" suburb names in Sydney and Newcastle do have legitimacy though as the names of former tramway junctions. It's a bit different from naming a junction when there isn't or wasn't one. Perhaps in Australia's migrant English test, applicants should be asked to explain "Shellharbour Junction". That would filter out about 99.9% of applicants!

Just checked out the 2003 UBD street directory and Bondi Junction is a standard suburb name on the map in capitals, Maroubra Junction is in smaller and lower case print under the suburb name Maroubra, signifying it as a locality. The name Randwick Junction is not on the map at all, so I guess that is why the council thinks it has carte blanche.

I can't believe it! It's more than 24 hours since Greg Sutherland declared in the S.M.Herald of 27.7.17 the lack of interoperability between the Inner West light rail line and the Eastern suburbs line, and nobody here has yet discussed it. The article did however generate three letters to the editor the following day, pontificating (still!) on the size of the North West metro tunnels!

Probably because nobody else considers it to be a big issue. Given the 2 lines will operate independently, save for some ECS working on the Inner West line by CBD&SE trams to Lilyfield depot, not really an issue.

For a tram to operate from Dulwich Hill to Moore Park would require a reversal of direction because of the way the junction at the corner of George & Hay Strees is configured, so not overly practical when a major sporting event is taking place. Not to mention that the new trams will be too long to be accommodated on the existing platforms.

Stating the obvious is hardly news.

Now if we could properly separate and have dedicated fleet for each rail line

It has been known in enthusiast circles for quite some time; not sure if it was discussed here previously.

Bondi Junction has its own Post Office as distinct from Bondi and Bondi Beach POs.

I think the line should have terminated at "The Spot".

That would be a great name.

My opinion, for what it is worth is the Randwick line should have terminated at Coogee Beach along the 373 route.Thats the busiest service there.

Obviously the High Cross Park termination point is retarded but would there be issues with reviving the old route via Carr St?

Carr Street, just before the corner with Arden Street,Simon.Simple terminus, within one block walking distance of the beach and commercial area.Just convert Carr Street to a tram only street.
I found it fascinating that the tram won't go down to Coogee.Coogee generates great patronage ,but the line will terminate roughly a km and a half short at Randwick.A missed opportunity I think.
I wonder whether the reasoning was the cost in going down the hill, but in such an expensive project ,a few million more in going down the hill, relative to the patronage in Coogee would be worth the investment over the long term.
