Obviously Opal card information screens.

Looks like it's at Wynyard.

Yes it is Wynyard
They will be where the card is tagged on/off
Also the barriers supposedly have stronger motors in them, to prevent them being pushed apart easily.
They will be installed at Ashfield from 2/4 ,North Sydney 9/4,Circular Quay 12/4,Milsons Pt 16/4, Town Hall 23/4.

Just from a usage point of view, aren't those Opal readers too far along the ledge to be effective?
Just looking at how far along they are, they look like they're almost in line with the barriers, which suggests that you'd get people having to reach out overly in front of themselves, rather than the current situation where they insert their ticket, walk about 1.5 metres and then through the barriers.

Would've thought that having the Opal reader closer to the ticket input slot would be a wiser idea.

Is there a reason why they have been placed so far into the middle of the barrier, rather than above the current ticket slot? I mean, I'd think Myzone tickets won't be discontinued immediately and magnetic strip tickets will still be used, although for special tickets or situations similar to that in Hong Kong. Is this what happened in Melbourne and Brisbane? Or is the phasing out of Metcard, completely eliminating magnetic strip tickets?

They're just the screens. The validators themselves would not be located on the screen.

The two bolts above the ticket insertion slot is where the card readers will presumably be installed.

That certainly won't stop people trying to use them though.

Agreed - the good thing about the Oyster displays in London's rail set up is that they look like a display screen, not a validation device!

I would expect the opal card reader will be like those used in Washington, considering they have the same barriers as Sydney does.

Operators which do not use ticket barriers better watch out for this:

False validations, especially during peak hour.

Opal Card Roll-out

Post by paulbrown3 »

A friend in the uk, sent me over an oyster card and the Dublin smart card and I tried these cards on "red bus rumble's" red bus service ticket machine just near the passenger display and although it comes up as read error something is there to read smart-cards.

Sydney Ferries information on Opal Card Rollout:
http://www.sydneyferries.info/myzone-ti ... pgrade.htm
Transport for NSW will be installing new ticket gates on ferry wharves to improve ticketing services and standardise gates at gated Sydney Ferries wharves and gated CityRail stations.
Circular Quay, Manly and Darling Harbour will have their current ticket gates replaced with new gates which later will also accept smartcards.

Changes to how you validate your ticket
The gates will no longer print on the back of your FerryTen so you will need to look at the new display on top of the gates to check the number of trips left on your MyFerry ticket, TravelTen ticket, or the expiry date of your daily, weekly or longer term MyZone ticket.

If you need to check how many trips you have left before travelling, the Gate Hand can assit using a portable reader.

In addition, MyFerry TravelTens will be captured by the new gates when you use your 10th trip (similar to what happens now at CityRail gates). ZooPass, single and return tickets will generally be captured on last use.

Benefits for customers
There will be more gates and your ticket will pass through faster in busy times, for a safer and speedier entry or exit.
Gate Hands will be able to activate the wide gate using a remote control, meaning improved service for customers using the wide gate.
New Wharf Control Centres beside the gates will improve customer information provision - including improved control of Digital Display signage on the wharf.
New ticket gates are designed to be easily upgraded with readers for the Opal Smartcard ticketing system.

Installation schedule overview
Late May to mid June - Installation, test and launch at Circular Quay Wharf 2 West.
Mid to late June - Installation, test and launch at Circular Quay Wharves 4 and 5, and Darling Harbour.
Late June - Installation, test and launch at Circular Quay Wharf 2 East and Wharf 3, and Manly Terminal.

Only 3 gates have been installed on the Eddy Avenue side of Central as of last night. They are all located near Platforms 16 & 17.

I came through the lower barriers at Central about 17:30 last night (Tues), there were more than 2 or 3. About 75% had been done, I was wondering why only 3 or 4 weren't done.

As for people pushing through barriers without a ticket, why isn't there some sort of audible alarm if they do. Nothing deters bad habits better than having public attention drawn to it

Museum station (Liverpool St exit) was done - except I think they forgot 1 gate, the rightmost one as you exit the station

Fare evasion (Split from Opal Roll-out)

Surely that ship has just about sailed anyway? I mean, I suspect most people interested in ticketing would convert over to Opal straight away.

Comments about fare evasion split into a new topic. Can we please leave this topic for the actual roll out of Opal related infrastructure, it is not the place for general airing of parrahub ideas, trailerbuses, grivances with Railcorp, useless transit officers, society and the like.

Meanwhile, Interline Bus Service has had the new Opal-compatible ticket machines fitted.
