What does "dry hire" mean?

Basically "dry hire" means to hire the vehicle, provide your own drivers/crew and pay all the running costs. "Wet hire" means to hire the vehicle with crew and costs covered (as in charter). Airlines also have "damp hire" which is a selection of either, usually hire the crew but provide the fuel themselves.

Yes. Airlines do it all the time to cover aircraft being unexpectedly out of service.
If the plane has livery for the the alliance group and not a particular airline, it's probably a lease pool 'spare' covering for a defective aircraft.

^By that you mean crew from another airline are given "the keys" to an aircraft?
I bet they wouldn't reach the stage where some jet hiring company is formed to rent out a jet to any qualified pilot for private non company level use!

Ermm no.

The 'alliance' aircraft for Star have a small logo of the airline, and for oneworld have the tail.
They are standard operational aircraft, it is simply a requirement of the alliance agreement to have a certain number of aircraft in the alliance paint scheme.

But in the current security environment, you might need more than just a pilot's licence and type endorsement to hire one.

Indeed. There are a number of charter airlines that other airlines can use and short term leases
Eg. BA wet leased a number of Qatar aircraft over recent strikes (Qatar has a surplus due to recent events)
And a number of the Asian LCCs have hired on aircraft from Euro airlines over the euro winter

well in the 70's a driver from nth syd depot took a old underfloor bus for a drive & it ran out of fuel just near taree he was dismissed don't know why a ryde underfloor bud was taken for a joy ride one night the police from Katoomba rang the depot to ask did they have number such & such bus the chargeman looked at the bus sheet said yed its on the back of road 29 about 3 hours latter the police called again could you pleade go & look and touch the bus so he did police said ok next morning a driver was allotted the bus when he walked around the drivers side it had been totalled..................the riders had hit 13 parked cars in a couple of narrow streets & brought bus back and parked it!

And there was that woman who "borrowed" buses from W and operated a few "free trips" into the city, smashing up a few cars in the process.

Damp hire refers to hiring the plane with a flight crew but without a cabin crew. Owner paying for fuel? Seems like that would not be popular.

She was notorious in the East for this type of behaviour, she also raided 'old' Randwick. I wonder if forum member 'Captain Ch' can confirm if this lady ever 'borrowed' a bus from Ryde Depot?

yes she did 3 times she was going out with her b;f a young driver from ryde he caught in a ryde bus one night she pinched from quay east layover she was in a full female uniform a ex driver gave her............he saw her driving the bus along the quay he stopped his bus ran across the rd to stop her and she ran over his legs! she went to jail she was the reason depots started to get gates across driveways just before Olympics! she had a fixation about buses she knew all routes and would never take the money ppl offered for fares as she was afraid of the ticket machines! think her name was Teresa! she was a young aboriginal girl after she got out of jail she lived with a female driver who felt sorry for her but she attackrd her with sissors and was placed in a mental hospital but she gave Sydney buses hell for a couple years!
