515 Desto question

Post by Blackadder »

Just something that puzzels me about the destination signs on some outbound 515 services Eastwood via Denistone Stn :?:
Now AFAIK the closest 515 gets to Denistone Stn is Ryde Hospital, and then still a fair distance to walk to the station. (not really going via in my books), hope someone can elaborate on the reasons why the desto are like this.
Thanks

Looking at the map for the 515, it shows that some services divert via Denistone station.

The 8.37am Ex Ryde to Eastwood Service operates via Denistone Station.
That operates on school days only

I've seen buses displaying this deso at various times including weekends. Last time i looked at the STA Mobitec codes I think the first outbound 515 desto (5150 or 5151 whichever it is) was the one that showed "via Denistone Stn". Hence drivers would put up this desto thinking it is the desto for the normal route. Most drivers wouldn't watch the Mobitec display to read every scroll to realise the "via Denistone Stn".

a similar situation occurs with with the 544, Mobitec allows for the Welby/Lansdown st diversion, most drivers wouldn't know that option on the desto even exists, that's why you very rarely see it displayed.....unless of course its me doing one :)

The code for EASTWOOD via DENISTONE STN is 5152 so i wonder why the drivers use that rather than the traditional 5150 5151.

History Lesson.

The Denistone Stn diversion and more than that the Beattie Ave section over which the 0837 Ryde to Eastwood 515 traverses is part of a fairly circuitous route taken by buses back in the Sinclair days.In fact if one takes a walk down Beattie Ave and Rickard St. Denistone East the original bus stops are still in place, in Beattie Ave at least there are stops on both sides of the road. The ones in Beattie Ave on the Eastern side of the street are the last ones from the Sinclair days still in use and go back more than forty years.

The drivers seem to be using 5152 for Eastwood 515 because they don't bother to check the difference between 5150 and 5152. They obviously just see "Eastwood" and think that's good enough, without reading the subtext. There is also another one 5154 - for the short trips between Ryde and Eastwood only - displaying only "via Ryde Hospital" rather than scrolling Via Drummoyne, Via Gladesville as well, but as if any drivers other than us enthusiasts would bother to use that. In summary:

5150 - EASTWOOD - via Drummoyne, Gladesville, Ryde Hospital
5151 - CITY - Circular Quay, via Ryde Hospital
5152 - EASTWOOD - Via Denistone Station
5153 - CITY - Wynyard, via Ryde Hospital
5154 - EASTWOOD - via Ryde Hospital
5155 - RYDE - via Ryde Hospital

And yes I know some of the bits are abbreviated but i can't remember exactly how

Similar variations exist for other routes from Ryde, such as the 544 as mentioned, and 534, to denote the two main variations - via Lane Cove Road, or via North Ryde (Wicks Road).

Unfortunately on the Harris Park routes, where virtually hundreds of variations exist, there are mostly no different desto codes to show the 'vias' except, I believe, for the Volgrens transferred from Brookvale to Ryde, which have a new version loaded. I don't think they've done a very good job of them though - with some diversions included and others left out.
Is it the truth, or did you hear it from the truth engineer?
