But I think Constance got it right with this choice though - Sydney public transport is a joke...

The transport minister is supposed to be fixing it, not treating it as a joke...

If the top treats it as a joke, so does the entire management chain down.

Everyone knew there had been a public vote on the naming of one vessel out of five. Don't attack our minister for honouring that.

The MUA summed up the issue very well:

“It’s an insult to the integrity and heritage of Sydney Ferries, it undermines the professionalism and pride of the fleet.

“This is not a five-minute internet sensation — this name has to be around for 20, 30, 40 years.

And never mind 20 or 40 years. It's already a dated joke right now.

It seems like a last minute decision according to Ian Kiernan, founder of Clean up Australia...

This has been blown way out of proportion now!

Black words on the side of a vessel that may or may not make someone giggle as they board is not the bloody end of the world, and it doesn't insult the 'integrity' of the ferries. What does damage the integrity is the workers threatening to boycott working on it because they take themselves too seriously.

If they don't want to work on a ferry with that name then they should quit, else be fired for not doing their jobs.

Well we have a divergence of opinion on that then.

Out of your many cryptic posts Swiftie this would be the most cryptic. :?

All of you land transport types with your vehicle numbers don't realise that these things are a little different with a shipping service. Although boats sometimes are named with numbers, there is usually a bit of a more respectful attitude about names in the field of commercial shipping (not to mention naval shipping). People in the marine industry have to work with these names every day and there is a little more respect for traditions.

Sydney's ferries as a shipping service have a legacy stretching over more than 180 years, which would be one of the most continuous commercial shipping legacies in the world, and there is some industry pride about it. It's really quite an insulting putdown to people working in the industry, to the ferry service itself, and at the same time a demonstration of the increasingly shallow stupidity of today's marketing types. I don't see this lasting very long indeed.

And, heaven forfend, if there's a 'maritime incident' and someone is injured, or worse, the explanations by those same people will be fascinating as they explain the poor joke.

I wonder if he will go through with it once it becomes talk of the town and people settle into this unconventional name? The Eiffel tower was lambasted by the art community and now it is the subject of art. It's only one vessel out of six that has the primary function of moving people around. Why not have one vessel that doesn't have to carry a solemn name to it? Why is everyone so worried about it all of a sudden?
Ian Kiernan is coming across as entitled and egotistical with his complaint at not getting his name on there.

Normally these things get run by a few people. Must have been the kids at a pre-school, no adult could have thought it a good idea. Reminds me a bit of Tony Abbott knighting Prince Philip, every one just seems to have shaken their head when they heard.

In Ian Kiernan's case they had called him up saying it would be named after him then changed their mind without notice. It's very poor form.
One of the new Parramatta River ferries can be named after him though.

Perhaps Ian should now change his name by deed poll to Ferry McFerryface.

I know someone who thinks Toe-nail Abbott is the closest thing to god but still thought that captain's call knighting of Prince Phillip on Australia Day was wacky.
With this ferry naming-gate affair, the situation is the reverse with me. I generally have come to find AC like an itch between my toes, but like his defence of this fun naming idea.

While I feel for Ian Keirnan.

This is pure publicity.
#ferrymcferryface will be instagrammed and facebooked around the world multiple times more than Ian Keirnan or any other ferry.

Same with the Qantas #retroroo (s) and before that (indeed before social media) the various indigenous themed Dreaming aircraft

Help!
How do I find a boat owner to ferry a dozen people across Middle Harbour near Roseville Bridge 'round midday on a Sunday, to avoid having everybody climb up and over the bridge? (Water taxis quote over $400, as they have to come from and return to Circular Quay!)

The usual band of already well acclaimed and recognised names always pop up to name another monument, building or vessel.
Bring on the silly name. At least it acts as a panacea to the elitist nonsense we endure in this city.

2GB’s Ray Hadley has revealed the name for Sydney’s newest ferry ‘Ferry McFerryface’ was a captain’s call by Transport Minister Andrew Constance and not voted on by the public.

On November 14 the NSW Government announced ‘Ferry McFerryface’ had won the ‘Name Your Ferry’ competition, voted on by “hundreds of Sydneysiders.”

A public backlash ensued with the decision labelled disrespectful.

The Maritime Union of Australia slammed the move at the time and have done so again this morning, telling Ray Hadley staff are furious.

The Transport Minister’s office has stood by the name, claiming it’s what the public wanted.

But, unearthed documents show ‘Ferry McFerryface’ wasn’t one of the 36 names on the “final list for public voting” released in August 2016.

In a statement, the Minister’s office has admitted to overruling the panel of four distinguished Australians tasked with creating the shortlist.

“The Honorary Panel made recommendations, but the final decision on each was for the NSW Government.

“The first five vessels in the Emerald Class were named based on the panel’s recommendations, final vote and public nominations

“The decision to include Ferry McFerryface was made by the NSW Government based on the number of nominations received from the public.”

NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley has declared to Ray Hadley he will rename the ferry if Labor are voted into government.

Milsons Point reopened today while the second wharf at Barangaroo, hitherto only used to stable ferries has also opened.

Milsons Point as per the new Sydney Ferry timetables. But Captain Cook even on their new website timetables dated today, they are still using Jeffrey St. Their new timetables dont seem to have hit Transport Info as yet.
