What Was Your First Car?

Postby Denv12 » Sun Aug 20, 2017 12:30 pm

Do you remember your first car? What was it? When did you buy it? Post your replies and a photo.

Mine was a Humber Super Snipe.I bought it back in mid 1977.Saved up money by working at Kmart as a junior casual. We knew the previous owner.

Thanks for starting this thread - for the first time in a while it has raised enough interest in me to get me out the woodwork.

My first (and current) car is my 2000 Audi A4 1.8L Turbo. Saved up for it by working at McDonalds, bought it not long ago. A very lovely car full of character (I.e it needs some work done to it).

My first car was this 1977 Mercedes-Benz 240D, which I bought in about November 2015. As old and slow as it was, I wish I'd never got rid of it...

With an easy 246000kms on the clock! Bah, better than a Camry or other associated boring car.

My first car was a clapped out 1984 Celica that loved to overheat when it got to over 90kph. Paid about 75% more for it than what it was supposedly worth (in early 2007).

Had it for about a year before 'upgrading' to a 1988 Mitsubishi Magna, which was very reliable, and ran very well. Even after unwittingly taking it for a swim after some heavy rain in the lower north of SA one time. Just let the water drain out of the engine, and good as new again!

However, it was basically run into the ground, and was showing its age by late 2012, and was only good for a source of scrap metal. I wasn't the only one who drove it FYI.

Mine was Volkswagen Beetle, though I didn't pay for it fully myself, just a part, and together with my dad we restored it. Sold it afterwards, though I liked it a lot and I still wish we kept it

A 1978 Chrysler Valiant on LPG and with 4.0l hemi six. Very reliable and cheap motoring for my first four years, but rampant rust killed it and I sold it for $300 in 2000 to someone who used it for parts for his Valiant panel van.
It looked like the one in this picture. Same alloy wheels too.

That'd be right, leaving Valiant drips all over the countryside

How did you know?? It did consume lots of oil, but mainly in cold starts, through the worn valve seals. A nice puff of blue smoke on startup.

My first car was a 1954 Ford Anglia 3 speed gear box, with twin carbs, that car could fly very fast saved up for it working at my first job.

That's how I got the yellow Valiant and it had a three speed automatic (standard I know) and actually flew in it's last couple of years when it got a tune up!
It had extractors btw and made the maddest exhaust crack!

My first car is my current car: a 1955 Morris Minor Series II Four Door :D that was acquired for $3000 in November 2012, though it has cost more then $20,000 since then as it had not been well looked after by the previous owners. I learnt to drive manual in it. I try to use it regularly, though that inevitably varies. What's great about old cars is you can do your own repairs, provided you have the tools, a bit of mechanical aptitude, an instruction manual and are willing to get (sometimes very) greasy!

And I'd gladly buy another, if I didn't dream of buying a classic British Double Decker bus instead>
