If you become PM of Austraila, what would be your ideas??

Somewhere to discuss things that don't fit into other categories.

Just on the topic of "civil unions vs marriage equality", I can tell you now that if civil unions are introduced, the majority won't be happy because it's not "exactly the same as the other guys". The majority (the gay rights movement) are fighting to have same-sex marriage legalised, despite the fact that a civil union alternative has been offered before which holds the exact same merit and the exact same rights. Sadly though I think they've lost track of what they're fighting for, and thus is why I refuse to partake in the gay rights movement. They're (I use they as a generalisation as obviously not everyone is the same, but "they" being the collective) fighting to be treated the same, yet make it so obvious that they're different by holding gay rights parades like four times a year and bringing the city to a stand still.

I, an openly gay man, actually agree with the argument that it should be a civil union instead. Marriage is a traditional thing. Don't change what needs not be changed. Introduce something new and exciting which is exactly the same as what was previously wanted to be changed. However that's just my opinion.

Thanks,

That's an amusing thing for you to say considering your posts in this thread are essentially opinions lifted directly from The Daily Telegraph and News Ltd's gaggle of right wing "contributors" without any sort of critical thought added to them.

Sorry, I cannot find a link, I think I heard it on the radio but now I am not too sure after looking at this http://www.worldaudit.org/democracy.htm

Anyway I believe they are going backwards a bit (possibly to the drop in their coal prices) but Bang Bang was supposed to be pretty good and it may be a good idea if we suck eggs so he can appeal to his domestic voters.

Interesting that our press freedom was not too hot but perhaps they do not show dead people up close etc.

PS They might have meant in the APEC list where they are rated at 62 (or ninth) as against China 124 (or 15th) Australia is 9 (or third) with next America at 12(or fourth)

Well after all their huffing and puffing before the election, the Noalition has gone and cut a deal with the Greens. I should go and place my bets that this will be a one term government now before the odds get any better.

You Liberal rusted-ons must be feeling pretty silly.

But however its ether remove (or increase) the debt ceiling or expect deep cuts..... I expected deep cuts, but however that very risky in that concept, its can easily still lose votes, but ether way..... i hope liberal don't spend stupid like labor (and spend money on things which will pay back in the long run)

I just want to ask Tony Abbott why he wants to lower or remove taxes, it's would be crazy and ridiculous. Why would you forego revenue when you need it most?

Permanently close down detention centres, as the cost of housing asylum seekers in these facilities is costlier then integrating them into the community.
Restore their work rights (recently removed by the government).
Turn solar panels into an export product.
Strengthen the existing gun laws to include hand guns.

A few more:
Introduce a Bill of Rights
Provide incentives to encourage states invest in public transport
Abolish the tax exemption for the road industry included in The Carbon Price, while at the same time remove the tax burden from rail
Encourage investment in environmentally friendly fuels such as biodiesel, with the ultimate aim of making these available on a national scale

Bill of rights seem pretty interesting to add
Yeah, give state funding for transports (but i would do it differently, the state got to build it or have the money withdrawn)
Ehh.... we going need road industry (since we can just build rail line everywhere).... but however remove tax from rail
I know of a petrol station which had biodiesel in manly somewhere.... but should be more popular

What rights are you proposing exactly?

If it's proposed as a constitutional amendment, people would be divided on whether it goes too far or not quite far enough, and it'd almost certainly fail to pass (notwithstanding how difficult it already is to pass a referendum). If it's proposed as an ordinary law, it could be repealed at any time.

I see it as one of those feel-good symbolic things. It's not really necessary as such. :?

Build a fast subway from Mascot to Parramatta using the excavated material to construct a dedicated take off runway at KSA then give the Badgerys creek land free for developers to build housing that people could afford.

Eddy:
1. That's the state government's job, not the federal government's.
2. You need to take a few hours/days/weeks to try and understand the reality of the world in which you live before you propose crazy solutions to problems that don't exist.

It says here federal government owns 1700 hectares of land http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/badgerys-cree ... 2xcgx.html

And I think they also ultimately call the shots where it can go http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/aviati ... index.aspx

I hadn't thought about what rights to include until you asked, but Freedom of Speech is an obvious one, plus the right to access public healthcare (we already have that, but with the 'GP Tax' being talked about, it would be worth protecting). There are others, however I will add those when I have thought more about them.

As for whether to make it a constitutional amendment or ordinary law, I'd be tempted to proceed with constitutional amendment option, as that would make it hard to repeal, but referendums have a history of failing in Australia which would make that path very hard to go down, so for ease of passage, it would probably take the shape of an ordinary law.

Like what they did with the electrification of the Norlunga/Seaford line. It was partly federal funded. But, Jay seems to beg a lot. "We should do xxx", says someone, and imidiatly Jay asks the feds for some money. It is time for him to use his own state money and cut a few things to save money
