Mr OC Benz in London - 03/02/2013

Postby Mr OC Benz » Mon Feb 25, 2013 10:55 pm

A quick whistle stop in London enabled me to get some shots around Victoria. Excuse the quality of the shots, it was around 0-2 degrees that morning and a great shock for me and my camera!

Did you spot the land whale called the Borismaster on your travels in London and did you have ride on it yet.

I saw a couple of them on the 38s, but didn't ride any. I'm going to be back for six weeks in May anyway, so will get a chance then.

What type of desto is used in the red deckers? They don't look like electronic destos to me.

Probably because they're not electronic destos, they're just ye olde style scroll blind desto, which the driver winds up...

Out of all the places I'd wouldn't expect electronic destos in new buses, London isn't one of them.

Many reasons for it. Many buses spend pretty much all day everyday out on the road. Blinds require less maintenance than LED and flip dot destos which would wear out quicker with constant use and are expensive.

I don't buy that excuse, there are plenty of buses around the world that have the same service requirements and have electronic destos.

Well I don't understand it either, but it was something I heard. I would imagine it'd be a pain to have to add or remove old blinds when new services or variations to a service are introduced. Or perhaps that doesn't happen so often.

I think having that type of desto is actually a TfL requirement for some reason?

I believe they are actually electronically controlled (Hanover gear I think).

I believe busrider is correct in saying that it is some kind of TfL requirement

Don't make that assumption until you've been in one. They may look crap outside, but I found once inside one to have changed my mind - in comparison with the crap that runs around London streets today - they have two staircases and much nicer flooring in them which I thought was a nice touch. There was one at the Brooklands Museum gathering a few weeks ago.

I just arrived back in London here today and will be here for six weeks or so. Will be good to make my own verdict on it.

The ones I saw today were electronically controlled using Mobitec controllers. Except for the old Routemasters which are wind up ones.

Also took a trip on a Borismaster today. I think they are an interesting addition to London, interesting and different, but I don't mind them at all, especially when many of the other deckers aren't really appealing. I did go on a B5LH hybrid decker too and I thought that was quite good. Yet to go on the Hybrid Enviro 400.

Definately agree with you there. The current fleet of London (and to a greater extent GB) Buses from pretty much all operators are totally banal and insipid. The Enviro Hybrids are even worse IMO - they make such a racket when taking off compared with the more regularly engined versions.

But the worst thing about London Buses, much like everywhere else, are the fellow passengers.

There's another London Country Bus Rally in Sevenoaks in 2 weeks time which I'm planning to attend - the classic greenline buses will be out and about amongst others.

Haven't been on a Enviro Hybrid yet. I do like the Volvo Hybrid however. But yes everything else doesn't at all fascinate me, although I suppose a bus is a bus and as long as it does the job!

Is there anymore details about the Bus Rally in Sevenoaks? Wouldn't mind going down there myself if I can get there easily (I am in South London, but not that far south!).

I had posted this link here before - http://www.skylineaviation.co.uk/buses/events.html

Scroll down to '19 May: LT Country Bus Rally, Sevenoaks'

Haven't been to this one before, but I'd imagine the buses will call at Sevenoaks Railway Station.
