effective Tuesday 28 September to Sunday 3 October
Date Published: Wednesday 18 August 2010

This year, Geelong will welcome the 2010 UCI Road World Championships bringing some of the best riders in the world to compete in Australia. The event will be held over five days of competition from 29 September to 3 October. There is an event familiarisation day on 28 September.

During the event, major bus route changes will take place in Geelong due to the high number of road closures. Local bus services will run on revised routes for the duration of the event. Buses will run later than normal and extra services have been scheduled.

We are doing our best to keep service disruptions to a minimum. Please allow extra time for your journey, especially if you wish to connect to a train, as the road network is expected to be busier than usual.

A special timetable and bus route maps will be provided on this website shortly. Check back closer to the event for more information.

The following services changes will apply.

Central Geelong bus stops / interchanges
The current bus stops in central Geelong will be replaced by two bus interchanges running throughout the event.

The west interchange is running from Little Malop Street (between Gheringhap Street and Fenwick Street (Johnstone Park). The east interchange is running from the current site in Little Malop Street (rear of Officeworks, between Yarra Street and Bellerine Street). There will be way-finding signage to help you find the interchanges and connect with local bus services. A map will be provided on this website closer to the event.

Bus routes running to and from Little Malop Street west interchange (Johnstone Park) are:

Geelong Transit routes: 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 30, 35, 36, 45 (western and northern suburbs only), 50, 51

Bellarine Transit routes: Torquay/Jan Juc, Queenscliff via Ocean Grove/Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove via Barwon Heads

Bus routes/shuttle bus running to and from Little Malop Street east interchange (rear of Officeworks, between Yarra Street and Bellerine Street) are:

Geelong Transit routes: 45 (eastern suburbs only), 55, 61, 62, 77

Bellarine Transit routes: Portarlington, St Leonards, Indented Heads, Drysdale, Ocean Grove via Leopold, Clifton Springs, Queenscliff via Leopold, Point Lonsdale

To connect with V/Line trains from the east interchange, you can catch a shuttle bus to South Geelong Station or walk to Geelong Station (approximately 10 minute walk). The shuttle bus from the east interchange to South Geelong Station will run each day throughout the event except from 10am to 1pm and 4pm to 8pm on Sunday 3 October when trains will not run from South Geelong Station.

Waurn Ponds, Grovedale, Belmont, Marshall, Torquay and Apollo Bay/Lorne buses
Route service buses from Waurn Ponds, Grovedale, Belmont, Marshall, Torquay and Apollo Bay/Lorne will not run along High Street, Belmont in either direction for the duration of the event.

Instead, a Belmont shuttle bus will run every eight minutes from 6am to 10pm throughout the event connecting to the route buses.

Passengers on routes 14, 15, 18 travelling to and from Belmont will need to connect to a Belmont shuttle bus from Settlement Road / Mernda Parade pedestrian lights.

Passengers on routes 17, 19, 20, Torquay and Apollo Bay travelling to and from Belmont will need to connect to a Belmont shuttle bus from Settlement Road / Francis Street pedestrian lights.

Belmont passengers travelling to the city can use the Belmont shuttle, then connect to city bus services at Settlement Road/Mernda Parade.

Belmont passengers from city buses can connect to the Belmont shuttle at either Settlement Road - Francis Street or Mernda Parade.

Route 45
Route 45 - St Albans Park/East Geelong to North Shore will be split into two routes during the event. St Albans Park/Whittington/East Geelong side will run to the east interchange in Little Malop Street (rear of Officeworks) while Geelong West/North Geelong, Bell Post Hill, Norlane, Corio side will run to the west interchange at Little Malop Street (Johnstone Park).

Benders will run the north side of Route 45 for the duration of the cycling event (instead of McHarry's).

Northern suburbs bus routes on Sunday 3 October
Due to the race entering Geelong on the Princes Highway on the morning of Sunday 3 October, bus routes 10, 12, 21, 30, 45 (north), 50, and 51 will not run between 10.30am and 12pm. If you wish to travel Sunday morning, catch a bus before or after these times.

Other route specific details:•Route 55 - operated by McHarry's for duration of the UCI event (instead of Benders)
•Route 16 - will operate on several revised routes during the week - check timetable and route map for details
•Part of Route 35/36 (around Aberdeen Street) will be serviced by Route 50/51 buses

This page will continue to be updated with information regarding changes to the Geelong bus network during the 2010 UCI Road World Championships. Please check back for further service information closer to the event.
Kind Regards

Victorian Government wrote: THOUSANDS OF MORE BUS SERVICES FOR UCI CHAMPIONSHIPS
From the Minister for Public Transport
Wednesday, 08 September 2010

More than 2700 extra bus services will run across Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula for this month’s UCI Road World Championships cycling event in Geelong.

Public Transport Minister Martin Pakula today announced that local bus companies McHarry’s and Benders would boost services by 66 per cent to almost 7000 trips during the five-day event from Wednesday 29 September to Sunday 3 October.

“The UCI Road World Championships is a world-class cycling event – second only to the Tour de France – and the Brumby Government is supporting it with a peak public transport service, including an extra 50 V/Line services from Melbourne on the weekend,” Mr Pakula said.

“The bus companies are adding an extra 1500 services from the Tuesday to the Friday and more than 1200 services on the weekend to cater for the tens of thousands of visitors to Geelong and to help minimise disruptions for local residents.

“There will also be a fleet of standby buses throughout Bellarine and Geelong to manage any unexpected surge in demand.

“With a significant amount of road closures, buses will operate on revised routes for the duration of the event.

“An extended special timetable and revised route maps are now available on the Viclink website.”

During the event there will be two temporary bus interchanges operating in central Geelong – one at Little Malop Street West (Johnstone Park) and the other at Little Malop Street East (behind Officeworks).

Services operating from Little Malop Street West (Johnstone Park) will be Geelong Transit routes 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 30, 35, 36, 45 (north suburbs only), 50, 51, and Bellarine Transit routes Torquay/Jan Juc, Barwon Heads.

Services operating from Little Malop Street East (behind Officeworks) will be Geelong Transit routes 45 (eastern suburbs only), 55, 61, 62, 77 and Bellarine Transit routes Portarlington, St Leonards, Indented Heads, Drysdale, Ocean Grove, Clifton Springs, Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale.

Mr Pakula said event organisers expected that the course would be lined with up to 300,000 spectators across the five days of competition, including 150,000 on the Sunday alone.

“Competitors will race on a 16-kilometre fully closed road circuit throughout the central and inner south-west areas of Geelong,” Mr Pakula said.

“Commuters should allow extra time for their journey, especially if they wish to connect to a train, because the road network will be busier than usual.”

For more information about public transport services to and from the event, as well as changes to public transport services in Geelong, visit http://www.viclink.com.au or phone 136 196.
People wanting information about wheelchair-accessible buses should phone McHarrys on 5223 2111 or Benders on 5240 5000. Both companies will try to schedule a low-floor bus for passengers who need them provided adequate notice is given. It is best to contact the company the day before you travel.
Kind Regards
