New 840: Pakenham - Gembrook

Post by Craig »

Dear All

As announced last week...
Victorian Government wrote: NEW BUS LINK CONNECTING GEMBROOK AND PAKENHAM
From the Minister for Public Transport
Tuesday, 01 December 2009

Gembrook residents will soon be able to get to and from Pakenham more easily thanks to a new bus service offering more connections to local services and railway stations.

Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky announced the new Route 480 (typo?) service at Gembrook today and said the new route would give residents a public transport link to Pakenham Place Shopping Centre.

“The Brumby Labor Government is taking action to give Victorians the best transport network in Australia and buses are vital to creating local links to shopping centres, schools and local attractions,” Ms Kosky said.

“This new service is part of the Brumby Government’s $500 million commitment to introduce new routes and upgrade existing services with longer operating hours and better frequencies.

“Almost 100 million passenger trips are made on the metropolitan bus network every year and we’ve seen patronage grow as improvements to the system are made.

“More and more people are now hopping on the bus to get to school or work or deciding to leave their car at home for local trips and let someone else do the driving.”

Member for Gembrook Tammy Lobato said the new service would start running early next year, operating on weekdays and Saturdays.

“The new Route 840 will connect with peak-hour trains to and from the City, and will provide several off-peak trips for shoppers and people visiting family and friends,” Ms Lobato said.

“This new bus service is a great result for Gembrook residents who already have public transport links to Emerald and Belgrave but have previously had to rely on their cars to travel to Pakenham.

“With connections to buses from Belgrave and to Pakenham trains to the City, it will be easier than ever to get around our local area.

“I have worked hard to gather support for the new bus service, and am very pleased it is now going to be introduced.

“I’d like to encourage all residents to take advantage of the new bus service when it starts early next year.”
Will allow for an interesting day trip - Spark to Belgrave, Puffing Billy or 695 to Gembrook, 840 to Pakenham, Regional bus to Koo Wee Rup, V/line coach back to Southern Cross. :D

Kind Regards

Victorian Government wrote: NEW BUS LINK TO START THIS MONTH FOR GEMBOOK
From the Minister for Public Transport
Friday, 05 March 2010

Gembrook residents will be able to travel to and from Pakenham more easily with a new bus service starting from Monday 29 March.

Public Transport Minister Martin Pakula today announced the start of a new Route 840 service at Gembrook, giving residents a public transport link to Pakenham Place Shopping Centre and Pakenham Railway Station.

“The Brumby Labor Government is taking action to give Victorians the best transport network in Australia and buses are vital to creating local links to shopping centres, schools and local attractions,” Mr Pakula said.

Mr Pakula said these improvements to local bus services were part the plan to keep communities connected through public transport.

“This new service is part of the Brumby Government’s $500 million commitment to introduce new bus routes and upgrade existing services with longer operating hours and better frequencies.

“Almost 100 million passenger trips are made on the metropolitan bus network every year and we’ve seen patronage grow as improvements to the system are made.

“More and more people are now hopping on the bus to get to school or work or deciding to leave their car at home for local trips and let someone else do the driving.”

Member for Gembrook Tammy Lobato MP, who has worked closely with the Gembrook community to lobby for this new service, welcomed today's announcement.

“The new Route 840 will give local residents more travel options. By connecting with the train services at Pakenham Railway station, this bus service will provide Gembrook residents with access to peak-hour trains to and from the City,” Ms Lobato said.

“Operating on weekdays and Saturdays, it will provide several off-peak trips for shoppers and people visiting family and friends.

“This new bus service is a great result for Gembrook residents who already have public transport links to Emerald and Belgrave but have previously had to rely on their cars to travel to Pakenham.

“With connections to buses at Belgrave and to Pakenham trains travelling to the city, it will be easier than ever to get around our local area.

“I’d like to encourage all residents to take advantage of the new bus service.”

The 840 timetable can now be viewed on the Metlink site, but there are currently some issues with stops at the Pakenham end.

Cardinia Transit have produced a temporary (undated) A5 sized timetable on plain paper for the 840, presumably a 'proper' timetable will appear in due course.

On Wednesday I travelled on the 1117 trip from Pakenham to Gembrook, which started from the station & then went to the shopping centre before returning via the station. Loadings were encouraging for the first week with 8 passengers on the trip to Gembrook and at least 3 for the return trip.

I returned to Melbourne on the 695 from Gembrook & then train from Belgrave. It makes for a very enjoyable & scenic round trip in either direction & can be done for only $3 on Saturday with a 5 x weekend daily!
