Connex: Middleborough Rd Project Timetables

Dear All
Connex wrote:Middleborough Road Rail Separation Project
The $56.5 million Middleborough Road Rail Separation Project will eliminate the railway crossing at Middleborough Road, Box Hill.

It will deliver widespread economic and environmental benefits with better traffic flow, shorter travel times and reduced fuel consumption. The project will also improve safety by separating road vehicles, trains and pedestrians.

A rail underpass will be constructed, with the railway line lowered by up to six metres, and Middleborough Road will bridge over the tracks at a slightly raised level.

Early construction works are underway, with major construction starting at the beginning of January 2007 and running for six weeks. The project is due for completion in May 2007.

The major works have been timed to coincide with the January holiday period, when schools are closed and there are less passengers using the rail service and less traffic on the roads.

Buses replace trains between Box Hill and Blackburn for six weeks

During major works, which will run for six weeks from 2 January 2007, rail services will be suspended between Box Hill and Blackburn stations.

Buses will replace trains during this period between Box Hill and Blackburn.

Trains will continue to run between the city and Box Hill, between Belgrave and Blackburn, and between Lilydale and Blackburn.

Temporary train timetables

Temporary timetables will apply to train services on the Belgrave and Lilydale lines from 2 January 2007 for six weeks.

During this period buses will replace trains between Blackburn and Box Hill with trains operating either side of this section.

Temporary timetables are necessary for two reasons:
  • We need to take into account the extra time buses take between Box Hill and Blackburn, compared to the time needed for a scheduled train service to make this trip.
  • Operational constraints imposed at Box Hill mean we can only run trains every five minutes.
We have altered timetables to meet these constraints while still delivering the service frequency our customers need.

There has also been a flow-on effect on Alamein line and Glen Waverley line services (which merge with Belgrave/Lilydale line services at Burnley).

When major works conclude, and trains start to run between Box Hill and Blackburn, regular timetables will resume.

Timetable posters
Temporary timetable posters will be displayed at all stations on the Belgrave, Lilydale, Alamein and Glen Waverley lines and in the CBD from 2 January 2007.

Belgrave/Lilydale lines – City to Box Hill
A major change has been made to city-bound services on weekday mornings.

All city-bound trains from 7.15am until 8.45am will stop all stations from Box Hill to Camberwell for six weeks from 2 January 2007.

They will then run express from Camberwell to Glenferrie and then express Glenferrie to Richmond. All these services will run via the City Loop.

Additional city-bound services will run on the Alamein line to meet the needs of customers between Camberwell and Burnley. These services will not go through the City Loop, and customers for Parliament, Melbourne Central, Flagstaff and Southern Cross will need to change at Richmond.

Minor changes have also been made to PM peak services, while off-peak and weekend services will follow the existing timetable.
