State Transit buses carry text on the windows above the wheelchair spaces stating:

THIS AREA SHOULD BE VACATED BY PASSENGERS WHEN REQUIRED FOR A WHEELCHAIR

Which is often vandalised to read "his area".

Why should wheelchairs face the rear in Adelaide buses. Why? Is there a rear entrance and exit for wheelchairs to use in Adelaide? Most electric wheelchairs do not move when the power is off and the clutch engaged.

on sydney buses the wheelchair faces rear, as that is were the seat belt restraints are behind chair , not side ways. if the driver brackes with wheel chair sitting sideways it can tip over.as there is no restraints.

Here's Brisbane's one, well the one on the CitySights bus. There's an additional sticker on the other low-floors that show the bell for wheelchair passengers, and to face the wheelchair to the rear.

Wheelchairs face the rear so that, in the event that the bus stops suddenly or rear-ends another vehicle, the wheelchair passenger is merely forced back into his/her seat and not hurled out of the chair.
