Photo Size/Limit Question

Post by G. Lewis »

With restrictions at 'No more tham 10 x pics no wider than 820pix @300kb per post', would it be possible to change this to 'No more than 5 photos per post with a total combined size of photo's not to exceed 3000kb no wider than 1100pix' .
So in other words I could say post 2xpics @1500kb each, or 3x @ 500kb & 1x @ 1500kb, or 5x @ 600kb etc. None of the photos could be wider than 1100pix .
I would be happy to go back to 5 pics per post if we could increase the size, I just think the current restrictions are a little small ... :-)

We have been through this before.

At the time I had a small screen and had all sorts of problems handling anything bigger than the 820. Since then I have graduated to a much wider screen and the bigger photos would be no problem to me.

But I suspect there are still people out there with small screens to whom wider pictures would be a problem. More feedback on this would be required before agreeing to this.

The software is able to restrict the size of individual photos (if using attachments) but can not restrict a total per post size so if we adopt this proposal we would need to rely on users not exceeding limits which in the past we have found just does not work not work.

Also accepting attachments of 1500KB would quickly eat up the space we have available for attachments. Currently attachment stay for about 2 years give or take a few months depending how many are posted. With bigger photos attachments would not stay as long.

And I believe going back from a maximum of 10 photos to only 5 per posts would be a retrograde step.

Added later - Photos as big as 1500KB are generally considered print quality and not required for internet photos.

So 10x pics @ 300kb (total 3000kb) would eat up the space available for attachments as say 2x pics @ 1500kb .. ? I'm not saying all your pics have to be this large, but if you wanted them to be they could. Don't know about you but I enjoy looking at a quality Hi-Res Photo .. the restrictions would be the combined total kb's of all the pics your posting, it would be set at 3000kb (as it is now) but with a max of 5 pics so higher quality pics could be posted if you wish. But if you did post say 2x pics @ 1500kb, then that would be all for that post as you have reached your 3000kb limit.. A max width of 1100pix is fine for smaller screens, that would be about the max I think.

As I mentioned, the software does not support combined restrictions.

And a max of 1100 would be unacceptable for smaller screen as I know that when we went over 820, the photos covered the poster information on the right hand side of the screen.

It shouldn't be a problem for Netbooks/iPads, etc. If you zoom out the page you can view the photo's properly.

If we're talking about attachments only, aren't they resized to fit a screen anyway? I mean, whenever I load a thread that has attachments instead of externally-hosted images, once the photo loads it is resized into a box with scroll-bars which you then click to reveal the full images.

I don't know, I think I might be rambling but this is just what I've observed.

Thanks,
