I just got it when I tried to search for new/your posts, and again, when I tried to open a thread in this section.

Yesterday I got it both in the forum and the photo gallery. So it appears as though it has not been resolved.

Obviously the problem has not been solved. I got it hard on for about 5 minutes just after 6pm on this board and during that time I was also getting it in the photo gallery although not hard on.

I've had this error a couple of times over the last few days. I have disabled a feature of the forum software to see if it successfully reduces peak server processing load.

I was about to post that I struck it about 10 times in the last 10 minutes or so and during that time when I did not get it, the response was VERY slow.

Within the last 24 hours we have made some progress.

We have discovered that we are only allowed 20 connections at the same time and every time this is exceeded users are returned a 508 error when they try to view any pages off the server.

This may be caused by all the photo attachments we host on this forum, it takes time for threads which access photos be they attachments or not to load and each person downloading ANYTHING off our server at the same time is taking up one of those 20 connections.

Now that we know what is causing it, we need to find out whether we can increase that number or not and if not, what other options there are.

We will advise when further information is available.

I was getting the 508 error a number of times the other evening whilst I was doing some reading (knowing is growing, I "learn" about stuff even though I don't need to know about it, anyway) and I found that going back and clicking on the same link didn't help, but using the refresh button instead seemed to stop the problem from showing up so much.

My assumption is that this problem only really occurs in the evening (or maybe early morning) when people are getting back from work and doing some reading or catching up on their threads here on busaustralia.com, and it seems there is no issue during the day.

So maybe a very slight capacity/resource limit increase would be the order of the day, rather than having to pay for a huge amount of connections we just aren't using (i.e. Scaling from 20 connections to 30, rather than 20 to 50), that, or maybe the rules have to be altered so that users are only uploading say 3 photos per post (at a smaller size too, perhaps, since I am used to the tiny sizes used by the vintage/modern appliance forum I am a member of), which would help keep the servers free. Imposing these rules might eliminate the need for any connection/service upgrades and would probably only be of minor inconvenience (what's worse, waiting for "your turn" to connect to the website or having to resize your photos more?)

Thats my 2 cents worth - its probably no help, but would at least help reduce any associated costs to do with the site.

But even a slight increase in capacity may need to be negotiated with the owner of the server. It is not something we have direct control over.

Also it may be difficult comparing it with other boards as their server may have different rules - I dont think our previous server had this rule and hence it has only happened since we changed server.

But we appreciate your comments which will help us to make sure we cover all possibilities.

And let me guess, you only found out about this rule, after you changed servers?

Is the attachment option really needed, as what about photo hosting sites?

We would have a massive drop off of photo contributions if we did away with attachments. That is not something we are prepared to allow.

I believe it is not just attachments but also other photos which may cause the problem so doing away with attachments is not an option as it probably wont solve anything.

There is no need to report this any further until after we manage to make the change which will hopefully correct the problem. It is a matter of working with the server owner to implement this and this may take a little bit of time.
