Annoying Avatars
Annoying Avatars
Normally i wouldnt say anything. But there are some avatars out there which are ridiculously stupid and downright annoying. You cant concentrate on what you are typing or reading becuase they flash with various colours or photos. Some of the flashing scroll ones are done well, but others seem to be around just to annoy. The perfect example i can give is the member "Bustech Rules" He has a avatar which constantly flashes a number then a photo of a surfside bus back and forward with differnet numbers. This is really a distraction from reading the board and even more annoying the young lad or lass not quite sure seems to reply to heaps of threads so that avatar is everywhere.
Anyways am I the only one who find these things annoying?

Ive been there and done that....

Re: Annoying Avatars
Simple solution- uncheck the "show avatars" thingy in the user control pannel.

But then There are some nice simple avatars. What i believe we Would like is there to be a avatar policy implemented on the forum regarding avatars

There is- It cant be bigger than 150x150px- If people dont like the avatars, they should chose to not view them.

So what would you suggest?037291 wrote:But also guidlines regarding the content of the avatar. as like your avatar and simalar are very nice.
There are some things I object to and as an administrator I have removed some but I feel that the member who started this thread was not referring to that sort of thing.

Re: Annoying Avatars
Just something stoping the obvious flashing and colur change . For example the scrolling destos i would find acceptable as they are discreete. but the flashing from one colur to another quickly would be unaceptable .
These comments are in my own opinion only .
Like this is what i will deem as a anoying avatar

While this would be appropriate

Re: Annoying Avatars
The link must not so justice to the avator as it does not flash or do anyhting when I look at it - it just shows a 3 in a coloured square.
Perhaps if you gave a link to a user who is using it?

Re: Annoying Avatars
Its Bustech Rules avatar- It goes from a yellow surside XDI, to a 3, back to the XDI, then to Oh!, XDI, then 2, XDI, then rules!. Its worth noting that his avatar appears to have slowed down a fair bit from what it was.....

Re: Annoying Avatars
Flashing avatars have been a contentious issue before.
But no one has so far come up with a wording that we can use as a a guideline.
The rate of flashing appears to be one issue - can we define a maximun no of flashings during a certain period?
But then the number of different things shown could also be an issue - again should we define a maximum there?
Unless we are specific, it is impossible to control.

Re: Annoying Avatars
Here is the avatar in question
Removed Scroll down to post by Volvo B12BLEA
the problem is that the word annoying can and will be defined differently by others. another problem it raises with the avatar is that there are good discreete animated images that could be outside any posible rule changes.

Reduce flashing speed & images because of medical reasons.
That's not really the issue, as Senior did say some are well done, it's the fast flashing that he and others find annoying.C130 wrote:There is- It cant be bigger than 150x150px- If people dont like the avatars, they should chose to not view them.
I have to agree with the original poster and 037291. I don't mind flashing avatars, however due to medical reasons, with people such as epilepsy, etc, fast flashing avatars can affect them. The flashing and the number of pictures in a GIF avatars need to be reduced.
When people choose multiple image avatars, may I ask to please keep in mind those that may be affected due to medical reasons.

Re: Annoying Avatars
Some background information on the issue
this is the guide lines about web design and flashing
This information came from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photosensitive_epilepsy and i hope is usefull
ps. no i do not suffer from this i am just bored
Photosensitive epilepsy is a form of epilepsy in which seizures are triggered by visual stimuli that form patterns in time or space, such as flashing lights, bold, regular patterns, or regular moving patterns.
The World Wide Web Consortium have produced Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. Version 1, produced in 1999, suggest designers allow users to control flickering or avoid causing the screen to flicker at all [1].
In the U.S., websites provided by federal agencies are governed by section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. This says that pages shall be designed to avoid causing the screen to flicker with a frequency greater than 2 Hz and less than 55 Hz.[2]

In March 2008 the Anonymous group of hackers was believed to be behind an attack on a forum for epilepsy sufferers.[7] The attack consisted of GIF images flashing at high speeds

Re: Annoying Avatars
BUSTECH RULES's display picture or avatar is a pun on the band named 3oh!3 which he turned into his favourite Surfside XDi - one of the only ones in Surfside livery. I don't see why that is annoying, I have viewed his posts and actually saw it has being quite clever. I don't see why people can't scroll down a little further when they view his posts so it doesn't attrack to much attention or just select him as a foe so his posts don't display.

Re: Annoying Avatars
To be honest, Bustech Rules' avatar doesn't bother me at all.
But it would be good if there was an option on each users' profile so that you can block out that user's avatar.

If you don't like viewing avatars, then don't.
Go here http://www.busaustralia.com/forum/ucp.p ... &mode=view and select NO to Avatars Displaying.

Re: Annoying Avatars
But it is just that avatar that is causing the problem as it is nice to see the people who put frequent avatars of there recent trips . And then they know to look out for their photos.

Re: Annoying Avatars
Defining someone as a foe does not solve the problem as you will also not see his posts.
And a number of other people may introduce similar avatars which means that you would not see the posts of those people if you defined them as foes, which may be very inconvenient.
Unfortunately nobody has so far come up with a usable guideline. Having a look at the avatar concerned did not help me as I have no objection to it.

Possibly have the "flash rate" lowered or a limit set on how often it flashes. Just an idea.

Re: Annoying Avatars
Don't know how that would work as I doubt php could seperate a .gif which flashes and a .gif which is stationary. Surely a size limit could be brought in as BUSTECH RULE's avatar will be bigger than others.Volvo B12BLEA wrote:Possibly have the "flash rate" lowered or a limit set on how often it flashes. Maybe a 55KB limit? I mean my avatar is saved at the maximum of quality in Photoshop and is well under that and is 45KB where as BUSTECH RULE's avatar is 71.47 KB.

I have seen some avatars on this board in the past where the pic flashes / changes at a slower rate.Hornibrook wrote:Don't know how that would work as I doubt php could seperate a .gif which flashes and a .gif which is stationary.
