Trial of New Software for ATDB Forum

Post by T1200 »

As many of you would probably now know, a new version of the phpBB forum software, version 3, is nearing release.

Some members of this board have been testing this forum code for quite a while, so as to gauge how its new features could apply to this forum.

Now that a stable Release Candidate version is available and loaded on our test server, we would like to invite any interested ATDB members to join us and provide some feedback as to how new features could be implemented and to pass comment on the new interface, among other things.

If you would like to join, the test forum is located on tiger_man's free webspace: http://www.mattyrid.com/phpBB3/index.php

Features most notably include a totally new forum skin (backwards-changeable), enhanced forum functionality and vastly improved moderation and post reporting functions.

Cheers,

T1200

Interested users are invited to have a look at the trial of the new software as mentioned above.

People wishing to register on the trial forum please use the same name you use here to avoid any confusion. Unknown names may be deleted or blocked.

Note that the trial forum is only temporary so users can check out the new look and functionality of the forum software. It is not a permanent forum and usernames & posts will be deleted when the trial is over.

When the time comes for ATDB to transfer to the new software your username/password details and all the posts on this forum will be transferred across.

I'm thinking not. The main reason it's like that on the test board is so that we can cross check if certain bugs are fixed and other things work as expected. Plus the test forum is only an experiment of features and their use anyway.

I've gotten rid of that for you now. Didn't really need it there anyway.

An update on current items being voted on:
  • Whether or not this forum should change its name
  • Whether a new system should be implemented for organisation of Fleet Lists and Photos by State
  • Use of subforums

We are now into the third release candidate version of the phpbb3 code, the version which is supposed to go "Gold" if bugs are not found.

It is expected that a final version will be available in the "near future".

When this happens, it will be loaded on here once we are ready, and when a number of major and minor items are sorted out.

I would think that phpbb3 is nearing final release, possibly by year's end.

Also just a note, although RC4 is released, I will be unable to upgrade the forum software, on the test board, until mid-late August. Reason: final exams before the big one ;)

Not that anybody cares :P but the fifth Release Candidate version of the next-generation forum software has been released.

It is expected that this will be the final Release Candidate before a Gold release of the software - famous last words.

The new software will streamline a lot of day-to-day operations on this board, as well as bringing new features for all users.

Will the new board be able to tell the difference between edits & new posts?

For those wondering what the big deal is about this new software, it includes a lot of good features which can be seen at http://www.phpbb.com/about/features/

The new forum software will be installed on this site in the next couple of weeks (whenever I have some time to be able to do it).

I would like to extend my thank you to various people...

- x10Hosting, for providing the hosting required during testing.
- Ken, for giving me and other members of the ATDB a chance to test out the new software. Oh and also for signing up as quick as he did when the first BETA came out :P
- Last but not least all of you who signed up at some stage and gave the new software a go. Without you guys we never would have known if you guys like it or not! :D

So thank you all for you hard work, and for those who didn't sign up or didn't get to look at the new software, I'm sure you'll enjoy the new software once installed.

Cheers,
