Workplaces and the Forums
Workplaces and the Forums
Wondering if all members would be able to avoid using 'offensive language' on the forums as many workplaces have language filters that pick up swear words.
An example of this was one persons signature referring to post wh_ring was picked up by the filter and subsequently blocked the whole page.
Does it sound like a worthwhile policy?

But shouldn't you be 'working' at your workplace?ABS wrote:Wondering if all members would be able to avoid using 'offensive language' on the forums as many workplaces have language filters that pick up swear words.
Unfortunately, offensive comments tend to spoil threads. It is just a few who are doing this. I think if moderators pick this up they should delete those posts. I think moderators should also be doing more to prevent posts degenerating to slanging matches simply because someone doesn't like someone elses idea's.
I am not who you think I am. But I know who you are.

1. This website already has a filter in place to remove innapropriate words.ABS wrote:Wondering if all members would be able to avoid using 'offensive language' on the forums as many workplaces have language filters that pick up swear words.

2. Work places are for work, and the majority of people here view this site on home computers, so why should we alter our posts just for you?

Do you have any data to support this argument?Nexas wrote:Work places are for work, and the majority of people here view this site on home computers, so why should we alter our posts just for you?
Many workplaces allow Internet surfing in breaks, after work and during non-busy periods. While I do not support ad hoc censorship, please do not assume that all ATDB contact is via home computers.

The part of my post which you bolded, clearly proves that I did not assume that all ATDB viewing is via home computers.Wrong Way - Go Back wrote:please do not assume that all ATDB contact is via home computers.

Just goes to show you the extreme conservative position adopted by some of these "net nanny" programs.ABS wrote:an example of a page being blocked is T1248s signature that makes reference to post wh*res, which gets blocked.
There is nothing obscene or pornographic about the word "whore". It is an Old English word that has served us well for centuries. The expression even appears in Shakespeare (King Lear, Romeo and Juliet).
ABS, perhaps you need to talk to your employers about using a more realistic filter.
The powers that be in our Information Systems department won't be changing their policies anytime soon. All emails are automatically archived, all documents are centralised and web access is filtered for key works. I know I won't be the only person who uses this forum with an employer that uses web filters.

From my experience where I am, they ban some sites for all users usually adult content, sport and gambling related sites and from there it depends on what they think you need access to. I can access various news sites (smh, news, abc, bbc and cnn) and also some uni sites. I used to be able to access this website and another, but both got added to the blocked list.
Although what gives me a laugh from time to time is when managers send around emails with links to sites that 75% of us don't have access to
