@ Dennis 96 - Yea well, none of us can plan for when we're born and to whom and what's going on in the world at the time, but everyone is different and has their own personal favourites that you can't change.. well it seems it varies depending on whom you speak to but most people are glad that they have lived through a certain time in history.. well for me , it is definitely coming through the late 80s into the 90's and experiencing the birth of the electronic age, the internet, digital media, electronic music etc. I couldn't imagine having to have been handed the task of researching any involved subject 20 years ago without the gift of the internet .. and It could be one such as what is discussed on this very page every week (eg bus fleets inventories thru the years, lifetime history of operations in revenue service of one particular bus etc) but then someone born longer ago and maybe experiencing things such as the swinging sixties and never having had (therefore never missing) the internet may have a very different viewpoint!
p.s. and I don't think that despairing about something new being not as good as something older is limited to any age, I can remember doing it at , well pretty much any age about subjects such as cartoons, comic books, movies and music!
*edit* - dennis96 - on reading your message more closely i noticed your statement about the Mercedes' being designed for a 7 - 10 year life .. well I guess flash forwards to present day and several manufacturers (I won't name names, but think of maybe a particular artic) can actually guarantee this design aspect lol
As for me, give me liberty, or give me death!
