Forest Coach Lines Mk IV Merc 0305's

Postby Mr Bean » Sun Mar 15, 2009 10:09 pm

I recently had the exciting opportunity to drive one of Forest's "Mk IV" PMC bodied Mercedes-Benz 0305's. It was m/o 850 and I had it all day, greatly enjoying the charters I drove. It was reasonably quick off the mark although died a little on hills. Above all it had a silky smooth gearbox, something I miss in the Mk IV Mercs at STA Willoughby.

Here are some photos of m/o 850 and a few other Forest buses. I must say that you still can't beat Forest for vehicle presentation standards. Nearly everything is immaculate.

All four of Forest's Mk IV mercs lined up together for a charter at Pymble Ladies College. These full length MK IV's with their 8 offside windows always look absurdly long to me when viewed from the side. Here a total of 32 windows are visible on the 4 offsides, with a total of 128 opening segments.

A little too much woodgrain for me

Here m/o 850 poses with a real STA MK IV 2997. It would have been nice to photograph them side-by-side but you can't have everything I guess.

m/o 9155 (ex STA 2550) now with the Parker family. Was on loan to Forest for a while, not sure whether it will return.

New Forest Volvo B12BLEA Euro V m/o 9668. This bus drove quite well and had a bit more power than its Euro 3 friends.
Is it the truth, or did you hear it from the truth engineer?

The interior of the Forest MKIV looks a little different to the STA MKIV Merc and I agree that there is too much woodgrain inside and the STA blue is better I reckon. I notice that these Forest MKIV Mercs are are available for sale at the moment.

It would certainly seem so from your post. Perhaps the Forest MkIVs are slightly longer than the STA versions? Your wished for "side-by-side" photo would prove the issue.

A STA mkIV like most PMC bodied government buses carry 43 seated, granted when they were being built they could have probably squeezed one more seat just behind the front door, like what appears in the forest version. The Forest half dozen seat 51, so I'd hazard a guess they'd be about 12 or 12.5m long whereas a mkIV is 10.75m. If the STA version had the narrower doors, I still don't think it would get near the 51 seat mark

These half dozen have eluded me in my forestland travels to date - the eldest bus I have ridden up there being a B10M/O405 - would not surprise me if they're restricted to school work only now

All Govt buses from the mid 30's up to the MkVI Mercs were built to a 17 foot 6 in wheelbse (with the exception of some early single deckers, the few short wheel base DD's, wartime Ford 'Austeritys' and semi-trailers, the Merc O309D minis and of course the Merc O305G artics). I'm open to correction on this list of course.

The MkVI's were built to the european 'standard' wheelbase, which is common on many private buses, such as these Forest O305's. These buses shouldn't be refered to as MkIV's, because they aren't. I believe that 'Stadt 80' is closer to the mark.
Enjoy.

Excellent pictures, Mr Bean. Indeed - you can't beat Forest Coach Lines of presentation standards.
