Perth's City Clippers

Postby Herbert » Thu Feb 05, 2009 12:43 pm

When the Perth Central Bus Station was opened, a new free service around the city block was introduced on 03.09.1973 using Hino RC520Ps 932 & 933. They wore a yellow & cream variant to the standard MTT livery.

It was so successful that a red service was introduced (in June 1974 I think) which worked a wider area. On the sign, not that the Saturday workings ceased at 1130. By 1300 on a Saturday, Perth was a ghost town.

Image

Both were later extended further, with the red becoming bi-directional. Later again a blue service called the "Cultural Clipper" was introduced to service Northbridge, then a "West Perth Clipper" (also blue).

Over the years there were a number of developments livery-wise. Now, thirty-five years on, the City Clipper concept continues under the CAT name. But, by request, here's a flash back to the early days when these very smart vehicles provided extra colour to the city street scape...

931 completes its climb up Victoria Ave and turns round St Mary's Cathedral:

932 waits at the pelican lights at Wellington & Forrest after leaving the stop outside Boans' store. Next stop is PCBS...

... then back out again for another lap. This view reminds me of what I used to see from my bus as it waited on the Horseshoe Bridge:
Image

933, which ran the inaugural trip, inside PCBS being passed by 970, the first Panther in red clipper livery:

A once familiar sight as 933 & 970 leave PCBS:

933 on the original yellow route which turned up Irwin St (later extended east to Victoria Ave):

Another "once very familiar, but now long-gone view" is Panther 969 turning from Barrack into Wellington - evidently running the red light as, just visible in the right side of the photo, the pedestrian light has changed to "WALK" (harking back to a day when most Australians could read and understand English):

Panther 970 outside Royal Perth Hospital. Not only did they look fantastic, they sounded great!

I used to love going for a ride on a Clipper when I was little. I remember going for a ride on the Leyland National the MTT was evaluating, I think it was a Red Clipper service.
I love the smell of bus exhaust in the morning!

Fantastic stuff Herbert :D

I make it no secret that the clippers are one of my favourites as they were running in the city when I started working in 1986.

Of course I took them for granted in those days, as I did the DMU's on the rails and The MTT livery and Logo.

One of many regrets, to be sure... :(

Were the MTT signs on the roof on some type of hinge/spring? cause they look flattened in the bus station but upright in all the other pictures.

Looking at HINO 931 and PANTHER 970 you mistaken they christchurch nz buses painted in the red and white but great old pictures I would like to see some of the leyland leopards that the mtt perth had they don`t get much mention in threads I seen the old LEYLAND LEOPARDS at midlands station I think on a training run when I was over on a trip in the early 90s and looked really good for there age.

These are gems, thankyou for sharing :D
Nothing looks (or sounded finer) than a freshly painted Perth Panther. Lets hope that sharing these pix here will encourage somebody to preserve an extra Panther in Clipper colours

I had a sneaking suspicion you'd like these, SMS88AEC
Photos like the ones of the Panther & Hino together, with their near identical bodies, always makes me wonder what it would have been like having 127 Swifts with mighty 760 engines instead of the insipid Hinos.

Tas Bus Nut, the MTT sign on the Clippers was in lieu of a wind-up EXPRESS sign that were fitted to just over half of the Panthers & Hinos, and also the early O305s. It was operated by a handle inside the front destination box.

The lovely Yellow Clipper and Red Clippers of the 1970's may yet grace Perth's streets again. None of the actual buses in Bruce Harris' shots are in preservation, but the Bus Preservation Society of WA has a Hino (83) and a second Leyland Panther (958). It is likely the Hino will be restored into Yellow Clipper livery and possibly the Panther as a Red Clipper. The second Panther was obtained for parts to keep 988 operational, but there may be sufficient assemblies and parts not to have to cannibalise 958. However, restoration of a second Panther would be a very long-term priority. 958's body is pretty rough after its time in the wheat belt.

Having a Yellow Clipper and a Red Red Clipper would make a change from the predominently dark green buses in the BPSWA collection.

Just need more members and workers to help. In hindsight 30 plus buses is probably too many for a small group without the population base of Sydney to draw on for support, but you can't let the buses go. One day we may win Lotto!

It would have been when initially posted, however it is almost 2yrs old now, hence why it is in the Archives. Look on the bright side, it could have been deleted, but it hasn't

Given the interest in this topic following the recent restoration by BPSWA of a Hino to replicate the Yellow City Clipper livery of 1973, and likely demonstration runs of 83 aka 933 on an early Yellow Clipper route over the weekend of 13th / 14th November as part of Heritage Week, perhaps it may be appropriate for the Administrators to move this topic from archives back into an active area?

I can't refrain from adding the comment that after the decision was made to split Photo topics into State order, many wonderful topics are now not picked up and are missed by myself and some other ATDB members that I liaise with. Some of us just don't have the time to regularly trawl through each State in the hope of finding the gems that sometimes are posted. For some ATDB members, this was a disappointing and retrograde step.

To be technically correct, this thread was posted in the time when ATDB had one section for all photos. It was later decided that each state should have its own photo section, which pleased some and displeased others... I believe that one day we should move all the photos in this "archive" section to the correct state sections, so people don't have to trawl through all of these old topics to find what they're looking for.

These are priceless. Just to clarify are you certain Herbert that the West Perth clipper was Blue. I always thought it was green? I used to catch a green clipper up to Hay street West Perth in the early to mid 80's.

Hi Jase, yes the West Perth Clipper was definitely originally blue. The were two Hinos painted blue for the Cultural Clipper, viz 930 & 934. For the West Perth route, 934 had the word "Cultural" replaced by "West Perth" (in a different font).
