[NSW] Arrow Coaches

Postby leopard1543 » Sun Mar 09, 2008 5:44 pm

Thought these might be of interest. Arrow Coaches operated a fleet of former UTA MKI Leopards and also a Leyland Atlantean (ex UTA). Here are a few from my collection.

Former UTA 3529 at Tempe Bus Service as m/o.890 and before sale to Arrow
Image

And after sale to Arrow at Bondi Junction Interchange on 16/9/89 as m/o.7032
Image

Former UTA 3586 is seen here at Bankstown as m/o.7312 for Hill, Revesby and just before sale to Arrow
Image

Ex UTA 3656 became m/o.7290 and also sported an 'AOA' as depicted in this scene on 15/11/89 :!:
Image

Former UTA 3746 also displayed the m/o.890 plate and is also seen at Bondi Junction Interchange on 9/2/90
Image

After withdrawal from Arrow ex 3746 and most of the other MKI Leopards found their way to Leslie of Doonside where they were
stripped for parts. The Atlantean visible in this view also ran with Arrow for a very short stint

When did STA assume control of the route 455 (renumbered 355)?

It was sometime before 1991, because when I moved out of Bondi Junction, the 455 no longer had the Alnor bodied Leyland Worldmaster or the Swifts. I think the STA ran it as the 455 for sometime before renumbering it.

I have a photo of Waverley MKIV Mercedes 2999 on a route 455 dated 27/6/90. This would have been very close to the start of STA operation.

It probably became 355 when there was a general route/timetable reorganisation in 1992.

On 30/11/90 routes 451, 452, 453 & 454 were discontinued and I'm not too sure (will do a bit of checking on this) but I think that this is when route 455 became 355 :?:

The 455 route passed from Arrow Cchs to STA on 23 June 1990. Renumbered 355 1 Dec 1990.

The 453 route came from Arrow the same day (Hospitals to Waterloo). It became Sydenham to Rozelle on 7 Jan 1991 and closed 6 May 1994.

ABC Coachlines acquired route 18 Bondi Junction - Newtown (later 455) from South West Coach Lines at some point in the mid 80's. It later acquired route 119 which operated in the Newtown, Sydenham & Waterloo area from Brien's BS, this was split into 451-454.

They also provided school buses for a number of the Eastern Suburbs schools. The fleet consisted of some Bedfords (4755, 5852 & 7666), ex SWCL ex Westbus ex MTT Perth Leyland Tiger Cubs (312, 5894, 7168, 7169 & 7170), an Alnor rebodied ex MTT SA Leyland Worldmaster (312 later 001), an ex Revesby ex UTA Leyland Atlantean (4275), a Bedford / Duple coach (TV.806), 2 Dennings (TV.405 & TV.406) and towards the end an ex VIP Scania K112TR / Neoplan (TV.955). I think they went into liquidation at the end of 88.

Route 450 (previously 129) Rockdale - Rozelle was sold by Tempe BS to Arrow Coaches I think in early 89 with 5 ex UTA Mk1 Leopards to the owner of Wollongong Coaches. After ABC finished Telford ran the runs for a time before they were sold to Arrow in mid 89. Arrow acquired a few more ex UTA Mk1s from Revesby and 5 ex ACTION AEC Swifts from Deane's. I think the whole Wollongong Coaches operation went broke in 90 and the services passed to Sydney Buses.

See http://gallery66610.fotopic.net/c861458.html for some of the ABC buses.

to give a bit of history of the route 222/227 done by my auntie mrs pricella warren who was widowed when a bus her husband was changing a tyre on , crashed to to him killing him.she was helped by 3 sons.the depot was just off victoria rd marrickville near sydenham rd,the buses worked from 5am to after midnight, not only doing route service it did industrials from the local factorys, including eat peanuts, shelly soft drinks, pye television, globe woolen mills, and the huge australian woolen mills on sydenham rd ,now the site of marrickville high school.plus on saturdays and sundays swinging loads of mad NEWTOWN JET supporters filled 12 buses to the mighty henson pk on sydenham rd,mrs warren never hired out buses for charter, there were 12 buses in the fleet, there were reos ,maple leafs, gmc, bedfords cac bodys whites left hand drives
all the bodys were built by profetts at king st newtown.she would never wash her buses, they were wash down with kero!!!!!!and the concertiana doors were keep closed at night.each driver till the end wore a starched dust coat which she did her self
.someone close to me earnt 1 guinea off a sat washing the buses in keo and sweeping them out.on the rear bulkhead was a signwritten sign stating the sections which was required by law.there were no tickets and a timetable was 2pence.the same persom who washed the buses used to at night go with the driver and worked the mechanical hand signal.and lernt to drive and thats how they started in this industry.often wondered what happened to that fleet, the throaty roar of those heavy reos.those were the days when these operators welcomed bus 'NUTS'
