Thanks GM and Centralian. Arch McVicar was a legendary pioneer of the Sydney bus industry. Much of his legacy is today operated by Veolia.

Thanks GM. I started my working life with the McVicar family and was there 'till the company was sold. I drove the last 38/125 that Saturday night while the rest of you were out on m/o304 with Arch. the banner adorning the rear of m/o304 was painted by me on the backing sheet of a side advert. You were a part of the family there and were always willing to give of youself for them. I was taught many skills while an apprentice, many which I still use today.

Eddie ended up as an assistant in the body shop, an easy job created for him to allow him to keep working. Many of the long term employees were given special jobs over the years.

When I have finally put my PBC book to bed I hope to start on McVicars history, (a much bigger task)!

That photo of 239 is just amazing. And knowing the driver and conductor's names just add so much more interest to the picture.

Looking at that bus, the post title of "The Early Years" is an understatement.

In sending me the photos to post GM said he'd had a letter from a relative of the conductor and she identified the driver and conductor in that photo.

Was this bus registered as m/o.239 or was it fleet number 239
I think I recall that McVicar's did have the m/o.239 plate on a later bus also.

I do not think it was m/o but "No 239" allocated by the regulatery authority, possibly the police?
Later they did have m/o 239. GM
