[ Gold Coast ] Monorail.

Postby Volvo B12BLEA » Sun May 27, 2007 11:00 am

At Broadbeach there is the Monorail that runs from Jupiters Casino accross the Gold Coast Highway to the Sofitel Hotel.

Notice the livery on this unit. It is very similar to the livery on Sydney Buses.

Edit Note....Reference to Expo 88 removed as it was inaccurate. My apologies.

The monorails used in Expo 88 went to Sea World - one full set was used for service on their system, with the remainder used for parts. They have four doors per carriage, and are known as a Type II train. The Oasis monorail has two doors per car, and is a Type III train (and closely resembles the Sydney cars).

The Oasis system was purchased 100% new when it opned in 1989 - at that stage no part of it was second-hand. The plan was to link Oasis, Jupiters and the future Gold Coast Convention Centre by monorail. The link to the Convention Centre did not eventuate.

Originaly the Oasis monorail trains consisted of only four carriages per set. This was increased to five when they bought a huge amount of Type III Monorail trains from a failed system in Merry Hill, UK in early 2000 - many of them can be seen cannibalised and in storage just as you leave the Oasis centre on the monorail, in a white/pink livery.

The Oasis monorail trains in service today are completely mixed up, using original cars and the UK cars mentioned above. Basically, if a carriage has a blue interior, it is an original Oasis car. If it has the pink/red/tartan interior, it is from the Merry Hill system.

Both trains are in the white/red/blue livery for the time being, as their all-over advertising contracts have expired. The current livery is a remnant of the "Gold Cosat Bulletin" newspaper all-over ad scheme.

I believe the other one actually has a brownish trim at the moment, possibly from the Socceroos AOA.

Who actually runs the service? Is it the shopping centre or the casino or a joint venture?

When it was built, there was a plan for a much longer line, but it has since been abandnoned in favoul of street level light rail.

The monorail rollingstock and track for the Oasis Shopping centre monorail came from the defunct Merry Hill shopping centre Brierley,Dudley West Midlands. This monorail line only ran from 1991-1996.So you now know where the rollingstock and track came from for the Gold coast second monorail line.

Not quite correct. The Broadbeach monorail well and truly predates the one you have referred to.

The Broadbeach system acquired bits of the Merry Hill one for surplus/parts and presumably with an intention to expand it to Pacific Fair, but that has not happened (and will not).

As I understand it, there are Von Roll components stored somewhere in a hangar at Coolangatta Airport - although I could be confusing these more recent ones for bits of the Expo monorail.

Back in the late 80s, an enthusiastic property developer had plans for a massive project on the outskirts of Sydney KST Airport. These plans included a monorail to connect his buildings and possibly to the terminals.

It was rumored at the time that there were containers full of monorail parts stored in the area, perhaps there is some connection between this and the bits now at Coolangatta ??
